Did he play like a max player last night. Of course not. Im still not going to take much from a one game sample size even though it was terrible. Dlo has been a key cog in the Wolves wins the 1st 2 games (not the most important piece but he has helped the wolves win). Games like these happen in the NBA. Giannis lost to arguably the worst roster in the NBA in the New York Knicks by 20 yesterday (I guess when you have thibs this isn't that shocking, Im kidding). Embiid was a late scratch yesterday, so Ben Simmons lost by 24 to the Cavs. Kawhi missed his first game of the season and max player Paul George fell down by 50 at halftime and lost by 51. The Warriors lose Thompson before the season and future HOF and super max player Steph Curry lost his 1st 2 games by 30 each game.
If we get this Dlo consistently Ill be the first one on this board to rip him to shreds. He was terrible last night, just think we shouldn't rush to conclusions based off one game. I mean I just listed 4 All NBA Max players who had there teams get their ass kicked in one of the 1st 3 games. Its the NBA it happens. Lets hope its not this is not a sign to come but its one game of pathetic play.
For me... it's not about the loss. It's about the effort.
And I pointed out plays/lapses of Russell defensively even in the Jazz game (e.g., pointing fingers for other guys to guard people he's closer to...)

These excuses are getting dumb. There is no excuse for what was on the court.
Young coach, young team, no culture. Until those change you are going to get games like tonight. That's the reality of the NBA. If you can't stand millionaires taking games off here and there then this isn't the sport for you because even the best do it. There's no difference between D Lo stinking it up on the court or Kawhi skipping a game for "load management". Both guys are max players not earning that game check and we see it everywhere across the league in different forms. It's part of the NBA. Welcome to player empowerment era where you just have to leverage the market appropriately to make big money and you don't even have to live up to that deal if you don't want.
There are different types of rest/load management situations. They're not created equal.
There's a very big difference between trying to stay healthy for the playoffs... which you make every season... and sometimes win titles... and not trying while going through the motions on the court for a perennial lottery team.
Yet as fans we keep excusing nearly 20 years of this. And I don't know why.

A large chunk of Kawhi's "load management" is him just not wanting to play. He's literally the only guy in the league that misses as much time as he does without an actual injury designation. So I don't see a difference between Kawhi taking a night off on the bench and Russell taking a night off on the floor. I just think it's old school mentality to demand all out effort from these guys night in and night out. They're not gonna have it every night. That's just the reality. If we see it for large chunks of the season then it's a problem, but again we're back to it's game 3 on a back to back against the defending champs when Towns was declared out the day of the game and he's the backbone of the team. Not everyone is Wiggins because they take the occasional play or game off. There's no history to suggest Russell takes every game off except the big ones like Wiggins so to already be jumping on the guy for one bad game doesn't make sense to me. It's one game that's being treated as an indictment of who he is as a player and you're calling out fans for 20 years of excuse making over 1 game. Take a breath. It's a long season.

3. Kawhi's replacement is trying to win a game.
4. Russell was not.
5. It's the 3rd game of the season.
I know we make kneejerk reactions around here. But I'm not one of those people. Everybody here knows I'm not one of those guys.
And I've never seen that effort from a Wolves player since I started watching in 1989.
