GDT: Denver Homecoming
Re: GDT: Denver Homecoming
I haven't heard whether the Wolves have completed the buy-out of Evan Turner's contract. That will happen soon if it hasn't happened already, opening up one roster spot. As soon as it happens, the Wolves should sign J-Mac to the same deal they gave Naz. Then the Wolves should quickly buy-out Crabbe's contract and sign Martin to a Naz deal.

Jon K: Hearing Jarred Vanderbilt will be on his way up from Iowa. Wolves need rebounding help. Maybe the young fella can give them some in Dallas tomorrow night.
Well, better late than never? Kind of silly that this didn't happen prior to tonight. It continues to boggle my mind that Vanderbilt is getting a look before Spellman, but oh well.

I like Martin but I think they still believe in the idea of resigning Crabbe. They may not end up doing it but if they want Martin on a cheapo deal they can do that whenever. If Crabbe wants to take a paycut and they can duck the Lux tax....but I don't know if there is a landing spot for him. Lets remember Crabbe used to be a worthwhile bench player for a couple playoff teasm. Maybe he continues to suck but most fo his career he has been a legit 3 point shooter.

Absolutely none. I'm far more intrigued with the other bigs Minnesota received in the deadline deals. If I had to rank them in terms of intrigue, I'd go: Omari Spellman, Jarred Vanderbilt, and then Jauncho Hernangomez.
Spellman with a hell of a game down in Iowa earlier today by the way. Vanderbilt with a do shit line, but some of it was bad shit. Lots of fouls and turnovers, but lots of boards, assists, and blocks too.
Jauncho was a big part of that Covington deal, so my guess is they felt obligated to give him every chance to be successful.
I guess I'm fine with Vanderbilt spending time in the G League, as he really is raw. But Spellman definitely seems mature and skilled enough to get some big league reps. Hard to understand that one with KAT down and Reid as literally our only true big..
I'd have interest in Juancho returning for cheap and have him as a bench guy. I know his finishing and other things are frustrating BUT I think the guy can play and having cheap guys that are still relatively young are worth considering.
Of Course Spellman fits that description also. I'm frustrated that he isn't playing. If this team was actually all in on tanking they wouldn't be running James Johnson out there they would be playing some other guy...which I would not be against them doing.
Re: GDT: Denver Homecoming
It probably feels wrong to praise anything in terms of defense for this team in this game but Martin stood out a few times. I see him as a guy that could be a more worthwile Bazz type signed for cheap except I think Martin's D is going to at least be average-ish...Bazz you were hoping he could become not a liability. Martin may not become anything but he did more than just go off for a bunch of points in this game.
Fun game sure it was a let down in the end but it was mostly fun. Watching some young guys compete and show something like Martin Okogie J-Mac and Naz even Culver (he plays hard and defends) is fun. Nowell didn't hit his outside shots but he made some nice cuts and I thought he looked ok on D out there. Beasley gets after it.

Nowell now 13% on 3s with the big league Wolves, despite being a career 40% volume 3 shooter in college and G league games. Classic! Just classic!
Re: GDT: Denver Homecoming
After this game, I really hope the Wolves don't sign Kelan Martin to a deal. I know he went off last night but I don't want "waste" a roster spot on a guy like Kelan Martin. He is an extremely streaky shooter and he does have a random game here and there that he can score a bunch of points but at the end of the day he is shooting 38% (really bad) from the floor and 26.6% from 3 (really bad). This is also coming off shooting 30% from a shorter 3 pt line in Germany and he is shooting ok but not great in Iowa at 35.6%. He tries really hard on D and I appreciate that but its not like he is good and I don't think he will ever get above average on D. Martin is also not a great passer (averaging almost a half of an assist in 17 minutes per game) and he is not a great rebounder (he isn't terrible).
I just feel like you can find a ton of Kelan Martin out there, he is not terrible but I feel like we could find a lot of similar players in the G-League and underafted players to fill that Martin role and you wouldnt see a drop off. Martin is solid but it isn't like he is a spring chicken, he will be already 25 going into next season. I would rather find a younger Martin type player who could have more potential. I hope the Wolves don't bring Martin back (he isn't a terrible player but he is replaceable)

I tend to agree with this take. The Wolves have Martin's RFA rights and basically this offseason they can keep him if they want. Nobody can offer him more than a vet min deal as a RFA off a 2-way deal. I think they should play this out longer. He just hasn't hit a high enough percentage of shots at the pro level to justify signing him to a deal when roster spots matter. I think he has some moxie to him that matters but I'd wait and see more from him. At some point in the offseason they may have to decide if they like him more than another guy they could sign to a 2-way deal. I like Martin but I tried to be realistic about him. I think he has one way or another exceeded expectations at every turn since becoming a part of this organization. He has been a pretty good story just getting to this point (Not that he is good just getting to the league) even in a lost season for a bad team.

Agreed. We need to find our starting forwards for next season. And assuming Layman is our backup 3, that leaves no room for Martin unless its a cheap one-year type deal sitting at the end of the bench. And to your point, that person should be a younger version of Martin. I'd feel a lot different about him if he were 20 or 21 years old.

FWIW an article with some insights on Martin.
