Marbury’s Aversion to Cold Weather

Post by Lipoli390 »

Here's an excerpt from an article in which Marbury said he wouldn't re-sign with the Wolves because of the cold weather. This is from a very recent interview:

I think I had a great experience. I had a great experience in Minnesota. I learned a lot. Actually, I learned the NBA game from Flip Saunders. Flip Saunders is an amazing coach, an amazing human being. When he passed, it hurt because he played a very important role for the beginning, coming into the NBA.

And my experience there was amazing. I just couldn't give seven years of my life to 40 below weather and snow. Now, I picked my life. I loved basketball, don't get me wrong. But, hold up, this is still a business, people. Let's not have any misconceptions about what this really is. And if I can choose to go where I want, I can do that. That's my decision, that's my right. I'm a free agent.

This is interesting because all the prior accounts indicated that he wouldn't re-sign with the Wolves because of his inability to accept that he'd be the second highest paid player on the team as a result of the max salary that kicked in under the new CBA after KG got his historically huge contract. In fact, I recall hearing Marbury previously say that was why he wanted out. I think he's doing a bit of revisionism to enhance his legacy. I'm sure he didn't like the cold weather here. Who does? But that's not why he forced his way from the Wolves to the Nets. He played almost all of his remaining career in New England and Northern China -- in other words, playing in cold climates was obviously acceptable to him. He didn't want to stay with the Wolves because he was jealous of KG. That's the truth.

Marbury has matured a lot since then and I've come to respect him. But it's unfortunate that he now refuses to own his own youthful immaturity in favor telling a cliche tale about Minnesota's weather as his reason for wanting out of Minnesota 25 years ago.

I heard that podcast... and scoffed at that part.

Semi-related... nobody will be clamoring to hire Marbury for his basketball takes. There wasn't much substance (or even coherency) when asked by the interviewer (Russillo).

Sounds better than what the real reasons were -- jealousy and greed. I would think most fans rolled their eyes at his newfound reasoning.

His family has a collective IQ of about 45. I wouldn't even bother to interview him or listen to anyone else do it.
