A quote from Rose's new book.
"Nothing against Karl Anthony Towns, he's cool -- and he's good. But you get kids these days that you spoil them before they achieve anything"

But the Butler drama was NOT about the money.

And again... KAT is getting the heat here... but NOT Wiggins?

I think the odds of Rose returning just went down... ;-)

Not EVERYONE has spoiled Towns. I think most hardcore NBA/WOLVES fans understand his weaknesses on defense very well, and most of his accolades were just based on his potential. (Rookie of the year, etc)
But Abe above is 100 percent right. There are far more NBA players who, lack the effort much more than KAT. We have one of the most overpaid and underachieving ones on our own team.
KAT is one of the few bright spots on a lackluster (being nice) franchise. It's like those people who were critical of KG all those years. KAT isn't at KG's level of course, but he is the teams only bright spot right now imo. Of course you will give KAT the max contract, you's be an idiot not too. The truth at the same time for his productivity (minus the winning of course) is that he is probably underpaid. Relatively to the Diengs or Teagues and of course, Wiggins.
There is not one team in the NBA that wouldn't love to have KAT on their team. at his salary That's a fact.

I'm not the biggest KAT apologist.
But I don't understand the overabundance of KAT criticism over the past 18 months. Is he just really unlikable or something?
Even when praised by pundits or players, it often comes with caveats about his weaknesses. I don't think anybody is claiming he's a finished product or figured things out... but the criticism has been steady and rampant. Of course, he's worth a max deal. Getting upset or jealous about it shows just how petty (or out of touch) guys like Butler are.

Here is an article and a quote with more context.

"Look, it wasn't his fault," Rose wrote. "It's the league's fault. Nothing against Karl-Anthony Towns, he's cool -- and he's good. But you get these kids and you spoil them before they achieve something."

I think it's pretty clear that KAT's attitude rubs vets the wrong way. A lot of the hyperbole and false humility in the interviews doesn't seem to work as well with his older teammates. KATs a great talent, but whether he has the character to be a winner is still up in the air.
Re: Rose "bashes" Towns in his new book
I think people are reading far too much into Rose's comments. He was just explaining why Butler got so pissy. And as we suspected, Rose confirmed that it was about the money - specifically, the Wolves giving Towns a max deal last summer while simultaneously putting Butler off until the the following summer.
So why mention Towns and not Wiggins? Well, because it was KAT who got the max deal at the same time Butler wanted a new deal from the Wolves. Wiggins got his max deal before Jimmy had helped elevate the Wolves from 31 wins to 47 wings. There was no reason for Rose to reach back and gratuitously mention Wiggins as well. Rose mentioned that Towns is cool and good. I suspect that he would have used the word good in reference to Wiggins - which may be part of why he didn't mention him.
Butler got jealous that the young emerging star, KAT, was getting taken care of last summer at the same time the organization rebuffed Butler's efforts to get a new contract. As a veteran and Jimmy's former teammate with the Bulls, it's not surprising that Rose would defend Jimmy. But at the same time, Rose criticized Jimmy for going about it the wrong way. And even more importantly, Rose properly pointed his finger at the League, rather than KAT, for setting up a system that often rewards young emerging stars prematurely over veterans.
As for other veterans criticizing KAT, I don't see KAT getting singled out more than other young players. There's way too much drama being concocted or imagined over Towns. I think he gets criticized more than he should by people on this message board given what he contributes not just offensively but as a rebounder. But that's fine. That's what message boards are for - to allow different opinions including those that are hyper critical. But let's not get caught up in some imagined drama that Rose doesn't like Towns. Rose doesn't like young players getting prematurely paid and pampered. Of course, Rose was one of those pampered players back in the day.

You mean back when he was the MVP of the league on the best team in the Eastern Conference ahead of Lebron in his prime? Those days? They invented a new salary exception because he was so good on his rookie deal. Towns just isn't near that level. So the pampering is more of a problem in our situation. How many vets on this team need to bring up the same issue of crowning him before he earned it before it's clear it was a problem and could be a problem moving forward when we need to get a star teammate to pair with him? Who are these other cornerstone players being called out by multiple teammates for getting crowned too early?
Re: Rose "bashes" Towns in his new book
I think the treatment of KAT has been pretty fair here. He's a max guy that hasn't won much of anything. Offensive wizard, inconsistent to sometimes poor defence, and a magnet for drama somehow with his attitude. KAT was playing like absolute dogshit with no effort the first 15 games of last season and almost everyone here gave him an out because Jimmy is an asshole. KAT may be cool, but I'm 100% sure the vets want the results to match the hubris. I sure do.
