Offseason trade/FA forum

Post by kekgeek »

BREAKING: Memphis is finalizing a trade to send Jonas Valanciunas and 2021 Nos. 17 and 51 picks to New Orleans for Steven Adams, Eric Bledsoe, 2021 picks Nos. 10 and 40 and a protected 2022 first-round pick via the Lakers, sources tell ESPN.

Also seems like the Pelicans will use their new cap space to go after Lowry hard in the offseason

Interesting. There goes my dream of acquiring Steven Adams for the Wolves. Thanks for posting.

I thought JoVal was a key guy for Memphis last season and aren't the Pelicans just trading one lane-clogger for another? JoVal doesn't seem any more synergistic with Zion than Adams was and I don't see Adams as an upgrade for Memphis.....this seems like a wash for both teams, but I haven't analyzed it much more than what Kek posted.

This trade gives the Pelicans cap space to either go aftee Lowry or keep Ball if they want. Valanciunas is not a great floor spacer but he is not a zero in that aspect like Adams is. Valanciunas shot 36% from 3 on 1 attempt per game last year.

The Grizzlies add 2 solid vets. Move up 7 spots in the draft, also add a 2nd round pick including a Lakers top 10 protected pick next year. I've also read that Valanciunas was up for an extention and the Grizzlies like Valanciunas but didn't want to pay big money for his next contract.

Feels like a fair trade to me but this year could raise the Pelicans ceiling. A Lowry/NAW/BI/Zion/Valanciunas lineup could be a really scary lineup next year

Moving up from 51 to 40 in the 2nd round has value too. Bledsoe is a guy that's probably going to get moved again. If not that contract could have some value a year from now as it's non-guaranteed. He is a worthwhile player just overpaid.

Probably a win/win for both teams in terms of fit. JV a better fit next to Zion and Adams is the perfect center for the Grizzlies hard ball approach. I think Memphis will win this trade in the long run as moving up in the draft and getting a future 1st is huge. JV off contract next year and will demand an Adams like contract anyways.

I agree that Memphis looks like the winner here.

Main Benefits to Memphis:

1. Jump from 17 to 10 in the first round of this year's draft
2. Jump from 51 to 40 in 2nd round of this year's draft
3. Get Laker's lottery-protected 2022 1st round pick
4. Get Bledsoe, who is a very solid PG with 2 year left at $17.5M per year. He can back up Morant and also serve as a trade asset down the road.

Main Benefits to Memphis:

1. JV is a slightly better fit next to Zion
2. Cap room. The Pelicans pick up over $18M in cap room by clearing Bledsoe's contract from the roster and moving down from #10 to #17.

Yep pretty much Lip. Sounds like Grizzlies may waive Bledsloe though. Makes you wonder if we could have got Adams and the 10th pick for say Beasley and Naz Reid?

That might have been a deal the Wolves could have gotten with the Pelicans. But it looks like the Pelicans were more interested in cap room and that's not something we could have given them. In any event, I wouldn't have traded Beasley and Reid for Adams and #10. But I might have traded Ricky and Reid for Adams and #40.
