Offseason trade/FA forum
Re: Offseason trade/FA forum
Just theoretically speaking:
I'm guessing most of us haven't seen enough of Millsap this past year to know how effective he was or wasn't for Denver. Let's say that he was still as effective as an average starter in the 20mpg he played for Denver and so there would be reasonable confidence he could do that again for the Wolves. I probably wouldn't go over the luxury tax to sign him either BUT Millsap COULD be a unique situation where the Wolves could sign a legit starting level vet player without giving up any assets other than money. What if Millsap ONLY helps the Wolves win 3 more games and he costs Glen 10-12 million with Lux tax considerations? Sounds expensive but what if 3 more wins is what they need to make a playoff game? What if that means the team is just a little more competitive most nights? How much more revenue including a playoff game/s would that generate? I think it's relatively easy to make a case for going over the tax for Millsap IF...he is still the effective player I think he is. Personally I think he might actually be a better player than PJ Tucker and my guess is Millsap isn't signed because he is waiting for the best offer ($) and best situation he can get. If his floor is the tax payer mid-level he can get that from just about anyone. He can keep looking for a bit. If the Wolves had to pay Millsap more just to get him here and that makes that tax Bill go even higher then I probably pass but let's realize this is simply about whether or not the owner wants to pay that money. If Cam was the owner he would pay the money and that's because he is more aggressive. There are successful owners that are more aggressive. There are ones that have gotten themselves in trouble. Cool and Lip wouldn't do it. There are examples of ownership being smart with their spending and owners that maybe should have taken the plunge. It's basically about money. There is also a case basketball-wise about whether you are worried Millsap will have a drop off this year and beyond if he is signed for more than one season. I've never got my hopes up too high on signing Millsap especially since I really doubted the Wolves are going to go over the Lux tax and I am fine with that especially since Rosas was able to make some moves to get some breathing room and add players that are a better fit on the roster while doing it and adding a 2nd round pick.

Keep an eye on Detroit and Memphis. Both teams have too many guaranteed contracts. They need to fix that. Sources say Grizzlies small forwards Dillon Brooks and Kyle Anderson are available for the right price. The Pistons are expected to look at dumping either Jahlil Okafor or 2019 No. 15 pick Sekou Doumbouya.
I just saw this report on Hoopshype. Should the Wolves look to sign Okafor or Doumbouya if Detroit releases either one as reported?

No interest from me on either Jahlil Okafor or Sekou Doumbouya. Without trying to beat the drum over and over, I'd rather have Isaiah Hartenstein, as I'm sure you would too.
I would have legitimate interest in Kyle Anderson, though. Minnesota just doesn't have the right assets/salaries to make that happen at the time.

Thanks for posting Lip. I believe the Celtics have 1 too many contracts.
I think Cam is right the Wolves don't have the right combinations for Kyle Anderson it I'm curious what the "right price" is for him and a Brooks. I think Kyle Anderson would be a nice get if the price was right.
Sekou could be signed by a team on a 2-way contract as he only has played in 2 NBA seasons. If I had to pick between signing him and Tyler Cook who the Pistons didn't keep around I'd probably take Cook. Sekou is still only 20 but from what I have seen he might be 2 years away from being ready to contribute...if ever. I'm not sure I would even do a Layman for Sekou deal even though it would save a little bit of money.

I agree, Cam. I'd take Hartenstein over Jahlil or Sekou in a heartbeat and I wouldn't consider signing one of those other two. Kyle Anderson would be a great get, but like you, I don't see any realistic scenario that brings him here.

I think Kyle would make sense if we didn't re-sign Vanderbilt. Kyle is obviously a more refined all-around player, but they are similar in that they are mobile 4's that can guard other mobile 4s and switch onto wings, but aren't really big enough to help much against the behemoths/pure Centers that ate us alive last season.

You're right about their similarity as guys who can guard mobile 4s and switch onto wings. But they are otherwise way different. Anderson is a pretty skilled offensive player with a good perimeter shot. That's an advantage he has now over VAnderbilt. But at age 27, he has no remaining upside. Vando is much higher energy player and much better rebounder than Anderson. And of course, he still has a lot of remaining upside. I know I'm not saying anything you don't already know, and I don't disagree with you about Anderson as someone who might make sense if we can't re-sign Vando. I guess, I'm not willing to acknowledge the possibility of failing go re-sign Vando. :) I was re-watching the "Last Dance" over the weekend. Watching Rodman reminded me of the value a buy like Vando provides.

Re: Offseason trade/FA forum
To be fair....
Anderson had career highs in PER, VORP, BPM, Point, Reb, Assists, 3fg and fg attempts last season at 27. While I agree that his lack of any semblance of elite or even good athleticism tempers any great ceiling for him... why couldn't he keep improving?
He's been an average to positive player every season in his career. And it can be argued that last season was his best season as he added a decent enough three point shot (36.0%) to his arsenal (5.0 attempts per 36 min).
[Note: I'm not even advocating Anderson over Vanderbilt (although I think he's proven to be a better player)... they're very different types of players.]

Yes they are pretty different as Anderson is a guy that does something on offense and you might directly use him with the ball in his hands. Vanderbilt at best is basically a guy that just runs around and throws a nice pass. Meanwhile Vanderbilt is a good rebounder. Anderson less so although my guess is that he plays a lot of SF in lineups for Memphis so if he played PF he would be less of a liability there. He would be a massive upgrade if we would acquire in from some of the other guys we have run out there the past few years.
Vanderbilt does have some playmaking/passing potential but he wasn't essentially a full time PG in college on a very good team like Anderson was. Vanderbilt isn't even close to Aaron Gordon's playmaking level.

Re: Offseason trade/FA forum
I guess I kind of revise my comments a bit....if we can trade for Kyle Anderson and match up salaries, I would still be for re-signing Vanderbilt. Kyle Anderson isn't the ideal starter next to KAT (just like Vando isn't) because he can't guard the behemoths that KAT tends to struggle with. But as Abe said, he's one of these "low usage, high impact" players that brings a ton of other skills to the table. Vando would be our #2 PF and essentially split time with Kyle. They would make for a nice combination at the 4.
