Late Night DVR Review:

- Just win. Cool with me. Even if it's against a team falling apart and losers of 10 out of the last 11. Here's the thing - they play again tonight. Beating one of the worst teams in the league back-to-back nights is NOT too much to ask. Why do I feel like the Wolves might sit Towns or Russell tonight? We'll find out (1) how serious the Wolves are about tanking (2) how good of a win this was in about 15 hours.

- Entertaining game. Kind of a weird game. Edwards scores 16 in the first. Russell scores 15 in the 2nd... but only 2 in the 2nd half. Towns scores 5 in the 1st half and 21 in the 2nd half. What it does show, however, is that the Wolves have three legit bucket getters who can take over games scoring the ball.

- I believe Jim Peterson has a bad ticker. The Wolves aren't doing him any favors. You can tell more and more how much he loathes parts of this team... mostly on defense. And we saw such terrible defense for 1/2 the game... including the trademarked D. Russell defensive move.

The first possession of the 2nd half, he was barking orders and pointing to teammates about defense... meanwhile his guy ran baseline behind him and was wide open for an uncontested three pointer... without anybody within 15 feet of him.

BUT... they certainly got better. As noted by others, good to notice McDaniels again out there. Great finish to the game for the Wolves.

- The Timberwolves had 18 TOs... but 12 of them came in one quarter?!?!? (3rd)

- Edwards shot over 50% again. Woohoo. BUT... as noted... he missed wide-open teammates repeatedly. The most glaring was Towns multiple times. That's not sustainable in many, many ways. There's two ways to look at this. (1) He's a rookie. He'll get better. He might even deserve the right to look off teammates sooner than later. (2) He's an entitled rookie with seemingly little or no accountability when he's playing abysmal defense and selfish offensive basketball... so why should he change anything? Edwards led the team in minutes yet again.

So if we're going with (1)... it's becoming obvious why the Wolves took him #1. He does things that nobody else in the draft can do. He's really impressive at times. And the gap on top-end potential between him and a guy like Haliburton (who had a bad shooting night) is obvious.

- Buddy Hield and Haliburton combined to go 0 - 10 in the 2nd half (0 - 8 on threes). At least Haliburton had 4 assists. Hield had 0 rebounds. 0 assists. 0 points. And 2 TOs. D. Fox was only 2 - 8. I have to imagine they'll improve on that 2 - 18 fg tonight. Was it poor offense by them? Good defense from the Wolves? A bit of both?

- Naz Reid is a professional bucket getter. He's a nice offensive backup for Towns. He's earned that spot. And he's on a CHEAP contract for two more years ($3.6M) combined. What's sort of interesting is that his starter/reserve stats are pretty telling. He's a solid or even good backup. He's often overmatched against other starters.

- Towns, Edwards and McDaniels went 17 - 23 fg (44 points) with 15 rebounds in the 2nd half last night. Reid... Edwards... McDaniels... Rosas slept well last night.

Good stuff Abe.

Since FNG hasn't commented, I can't help but point out that the only player in the minus column last night was.....you guessed it....DLO! It's almost comical at this point. On the season, he is a team worst -13.8 net rating. This is despite having some torrid shooting stretches. Just sheer randomness of what is typically a noisy stat or a consistent multi-season trend that conveys just how bad he is defensively? You know where I stand.....

Naz and Vando make for a pretty complimentary big pairing off the bench assuming they continue to improve along the margins. Both are still young.

McDaniels could eventually be REALLY good. He has the makings of one of these guys that comes in already pretty good in one facet of the game (defense), but also shows potential at other facets. His shot mechanics and instincts offensively suggest to me that he could end up being a really good two-way player at some point. That is a very rare bird around for this franchise.

Really fun game to watch this morning, and excellent commentary in the GDT...nice job of pointing out the good and bad. Since no T-Wolf or King was picked to play in the all-star game this year, it was generous of the NBA to allow the two teams to stage their own all-star game in the first half last night...I've never seen so many open 3-point looks! I'm ashamed of Q for piling on by pointing out that Dlo was the only negative player last night...albeit at only -1. It was just one game, Q...come on! I'm confident Dlo can return to his normal double digit negative tonight ;) .

I continue to be quite impressed with Chris Finch. We mostly agreed in another thread that this roster has no above average player other than KAT (of course I would include Rubio in the "above average" rating, but that wouldn't be popular here), and to have them beginning to win games is a tribute to coaching. He's a cerebral guy so he knows about Dlo's struggles on defense and his consistently horrible on/off numbers, and he also sees what an extraordinary offensive player he is (and he was never been better than that sensational first half...man, that was fun!). So how can he use him most effectively? By doing exactly what he did last night...play him as much as you can when the opposing team is resting its high-scoring wings, and rest him down the stretch if we are trying to protect a lead. And play him in the 4th if we are behind and he is having a hot night like last night. The issue is whether he can get Dlo to buy in, and so far he has...it was fun to see Dlos enthusiasm from the bench in the 4th quarter. But who knows if he will continue to accept a Jamal Crawford kind of role.

How much fun was it to watch our starters on defense...both down the stretch and even in the first quarter. The first quarter consisted of two parts...the starters only gave up 12 points in the first 5 minutes, but then Dlo came in and the Kings scored an unbelievable 31 points in the final 7 minutes! Fortunately Dlo's elite shooting and scoring kept the game competitive while he was in there. But you gotta know Finch was painfully aware of the absurd number of open threes during those closing minutes of the first quarter, and he knew he had to bench Dlo down the stretch if we wanted to hold the lead. Josh (+21) and Jaden were terrific defensively (as was Vando off the bench), KAT and Ricky held their own, and Ant made some stupid plays but largely made up for it with effort. Holding the Kings to 17 points in the 4th was extraordinary, and it was my favorite quarter of the year. A faint glimmer of hope.

I was quite impressed with Richaun Holmes when I went to my first live Wolves game a couple weeks ago, and having him out this game had a lot to do with KAT's big game. If he's out tonight again, maybe the Wolves can finally win ba...nah, not gonna say it.
