Is Saunders a good coach?
Re: Is Saunders a good coach?
Ryan is doing just fine. Wolves have little depth and missing Teague and Napier hurt. I like what I saw of Culver, Covington and Wiggins tonight.

Probably not. He's very young. And it's his first head gig. So the deck is stacked. But there's really no way to know either way yet. At least he's easy to root for.
The real question is whether he'll become a good coach for the Wolves... or will it be elsewhere? (Or never happen at all?)

It was interesting on the game coverage yesterday Pete said that every coach that has won an NBA championship has done so in his first 3 seasons as a HC. I'm not sure if that stat is 100% accurate but I imagine it's close if he said it.

If that's true, which I don't think it is, that doesn't mean good things for Saunders in Minnesota.
PS: Doc Rivers didn't win a ring with the Celtics until his fourth year in Boston so I think Jim Pete was lost in the sauce when he said that. What would make his theory true, though, is that championship teams tend to have one head coach that develops the core and takes the beatings before being replaced by another coach that inherits a built-to-win contender. In that mold, I can think of many times that's happened in NBA history.

Spolstra won his 4th year
Carlisle won in his 9th
Rivers in his 9th year
Brown in his 26th season...

I'm assuming Jim Pete was talking about the X year as head coach with that team and not overall year being a head coach, which would make your list a bit off.

What is interesting too is that you either get it done or are fired. So can Ryan win within the next 3 years? It seems unlikely, but who knows. Maybe we luck out on a draft pick or two and or trade for another superstar somehow.

Kind of a weird thing for Jim Peterson to bring up. Is he thinking this team is really going places or...Ryan isn't going to be the guy? It also seems a bit arbitrary along with some truth about a guy getting it done sooner rather than later but...again kinda weird to bring it up a handful of games into this new regime In which he had a hand in helping select Rosas.

I wouldn't read too much into it. He probably just read that stat on twitter or something so it was on his mind. I doubt it has anything to do negatively with Ryan. I think things are going quite well from the coach and player reactions plus on court performances. Things seem to be tending really well, despite the last two losses.

Re: Is Saunders a good coach?
Overall I like Saunders was calling for him on these boards years in advance of him actually getting the job. I played high school ball against him and he was max effort, Flip was a good mentor and he's a young hungry coach with potential to succeed.
In the most recent Memphis game when you roll with J. McLaughlin and J. Layman until 6:29 in the 4th quarter do you really expect to win?
Meanwhile R. Covington and Okogie two of the better defenders played a combined 46 mins. Saunders last game didn't give his team its best chance to win. Mistakes will be made, learning and growing from them is the key factor in my eyes. Players seem to really like playing for him and talk about him in a positive way so lets be patient.
