Mirage or Trend?

Post by AbeVigodaLive »

After a quiet 5 point and 4 assist game by Edwards, coach Ryan Saunders praised the promising rookie:

"Some of the passes he made were 10-year vet type passes and reads."

I agree. It was the most impressed I've been with the rookie all season. Imagine a guy who can get downhill, hit an occasional three pointer AND can pass like that... I couldn't wait to see him on the court again.

Since that game... Edwards has taken 40 shots in 57 minutes. He has 2 assists.

He thinks like a scorer. He hasn't earned big minutes yet so he looks like he feels he has limited time to get his. He has shown the ability to pass so I wouldn't worry about it too much. When he knows he's going to be out there for most of the game he may become a more willing passer.

I'm not worried about Edwards' passing or scoring. I've seen enough to know that within the next 1 to 2 years, he will be able to start for a team and drop 20+ PPG and 3-4+ assists per game without breaking much of a sweat. Assists is the one thing that almost ALWAYS improves over time with most scoring guards and wings.

The REAL question is how efficient will he be doing it? Will he be able to defend? Can he impact the game without the ball in his hands? Most of you know I look dimly upon high usage/low efficiency players that don't defend well. They are chronically overrated and overpaid. He's so damn young that it's too early to know if that is his ultimate fate, but it certainly was his MO in college and so far as a rookie.

As I've said, he'll definitely be a professional scorer. I'm not too disappointed in his play yet. Maybe better than I expected.

That doesn't mean I was impressed with HOW he played yesterday, especially in the 4th quarter. At all.

I thought it was bad, selfish basketball... stats can lie. But as noted, he's young. He's still learning.

[Note: There was one play where McDaniels was a few feet in front of him for a dunk, but Edwards took it himself into traffic. He got the bucket. And the foul! But for a team that regularly is losing by 30 in 3 quarters... I think it's more important to learn how to play better basketball than post better garbage time stats. Again, he's young. It's early. There's hope. BUT... player entitlement is a thing. Let's hope for the best.]

I hear you and those things are hopefully being shown to him in film sessions.

I'm kind of OK-ish with some degree of selfishness and forcing the issue. I mean, he truly is a born scorer. And the path that most of these alpha dog wing scorers take is to first be a scoring threat and then eventually you draw so much damn attention you can't help but find wide open guys.

I've seen him make enough good passes to know that it isn't a skill issue (I mean, he already looks like a more skilled passer than Malik Beasley or Jarrett Culver). I just want to see him actually make more shots. You wanna be aggressive and force some things? Fine. But then shoot better, finish better, get to the line, and manufacture more easy baskets for yourself when you DON'T have the ball.

I am confident that the Wolves will ruin him.

I've seen Edwards make plenty of unselfish passes already. I thought the pass to McDaniels that he didnt make was about the same part of the game. When McDaniels was open on the wing and Edwards dribbled the ball around for a while then attacked. To McDaniels credit none of this took away from what he did on the floor. On that big dunk for Edwards on the same side of the floor McDaniels effectively screened 2 guys on that play.
