RIDICULOUS stats I've heard/read in the last two days.

Post by AbeVigodaLive »

In Game 4 of the Houston vs. Utah series... there was a total of 10 mid-range shots taken. Combined.

- 7 for Utah.
- 3 for Houston.

Andrew Wiggins averaged 6.6 mid-range attempts per game this season. (40% of his shots). Embrace the modern NBA people.

I take credit for this ridiculous statistic...

Every Western Conference playoff team is led by a coach who's been there at least 3 seasons (246 games).

In the 30 year-history of the Timberwolves, they've cycled through 13 coaches... only one has made it past 230 games (Saunders). Embrace well-run organizations and stability people...

Just curious many mid rangers a game for Russ? Do you have the playoff numbers for him too?

Don't know about # of attempts. But I'm sure it's pretty ugly. Check out his percentages from the past 5 games from the mid-range.

10 - 16 feet -- 17%
16 - 23 feet -- 29%

For his playoff career, he's 37% and 42% from those spots. And as we all know... he takes a lot of shots there.

I'd bet it's a lot. He takes about 20 shots per game and only around 5 of those are from behind the arc. I'm sure a lot of his nearly 15 two-point shots are layups and dunks, but there must be a lot of mid-rangers in there as well. His poor three-point shooting and likely large number of mid-range shots might help explain why OKC finished 6th rather than among the top 4 in the West and why they can't get out of the first round of the playoffs. But at least Westbrook gets to the line a lot (7 free throw attempts this past season). And of course he averages 10 assists, 10 rebounds and 2 steals per game. So yes, he's a bona fide superstar. But it's hard to win when one of your two superstars is a really bad three-point shooter who takes a lot of mid-range shots. Sadly for the Wolves, in addition to being a poor 3-point shooter who takes a ridiculously large number of mid-range shots, Wiggins isn't a star, Allstar or even borderline Allstar.

According to basketballreference.com...

30.3% of Wiggins' FGA this season were between 10 feet and the three point line.
27.2% of Westbrook's FGA were from that distance.

Both were below their career averages.

Wiggins made about 33% of his (career is about 35%)
Westbrook made about 34% of his (career is about 39%)

[Note: Interesting thing about Westbrook in this year's playoffs... 26% of his attempts were from the mid-range (career low) and 33% were at the rim (near career high)... but his free throws were down. In Game 5, he took 31 shots. But only 3 free throws. That seems highly skewed compared to the rest of his career.]

EDIT: Zach Lowe recently stated that he spoke to a prominent NBA executive who said Westbrook has the 2nd worst contract in the league (behind John Wall). So... the Wolves and Wiggins have that going for them at least.

I'd take Westbrook and Wall -- and their contracts -- over Wiggins and his every day.

I'd absolutely take Westbrook and his contract over Wiggins in a heartbeat. It isn't even close. As for Wall's contract, I'm not so sure. It's bigger than Wiggins's contract and Wall is a big question market physically right now. Then there's the age difference. So I think I'd take Andrew and his contract over Wall and his. Truth is, I wouldn't want either one of those two. Unfortunately, we're stuck with one of them.

Andrew Wiggins attempted 180 shots from 15-to-19 feet during the 2018-19 season.

The Houston Rockets attempted 164 shots from 15-to-19 feet during the 2018-19 season.

My assumption is that Gersson Rosas will opt to see what he can change in Wiggins rather than simply cutting bait -- As we discussed on today's pod.

(Also: Wiggins made 31.7% of his attempts from that distance where the Rockets made 45.1% of theirs.)
