Re: Wolves vs Blazers GDT
There's no team better in the NBA at falling behind by 15 points in the first 12 minutes... then making a game of it when the other team starts fucking around... only to lose by double digits when the other team starts playing hard/smart again in the 4th quarter than this current Wolves squad.
KAT has hit a wall or something. He was terrible. Again. While skipping back and forth in this one, I didn't notice the complaining as much as (1) lazy shot selection (2) bad body language (3) next-to-no emotion on the bench, even in the 3rd quarter comeback.
Good for Dieng.
And I'm taking credit for the Bayless is selfish and terrible take. I said it first...

G played great but he doesn't have the stamina to play the end of the 3rd for a couple minutes plus the entire 4th quarter. I'm fine going back to KAT. KAT is the star of the team, not putting him back in could only do more harm if he takes it the wrong way. Big picture, yeah it's great G played well, but you have to ride or die with KAT in the long run.
Missing Covington kills our defense plus having all the new guys in there I'm not surprised to see the poor defense since Saunders took over. This is essentially preseason. Giving young guys some run and seeing if they can improve, seeing what they have, what they need to work on.
I'm not giving Ryan a pass nor saying he not at fault. No matter who is coaching these inexperienced guys would struggle. Wiggins not playing hard, Covington out, Wolves out of playoff contention, Playing rookies and other young players. Realistically I'm not upset nor am I saying Ryan is the answer either.
Either way, Thibs proved that he couldn't handle the job. Wether Ryan is the answer is yet to be determined.

Fun fact:
None of the 8 worst teams in Opponent 3fg% are in the playoffs.
9 of the 11 best teams in Opponent 3fg% are in the playoffs.
Chalk it up to shitty players if you want... or that the coaching change has affected things... but just going with "meh there's nothing the team can do about it" is another example of how this terrible terrible franchise is yet again left off the hook.
- Hold them accountable for being the very worst in the entire NBA!
- Other teams have shitty talent... even teams without two "superstars" playing virtually every night + a new highly coveted PF who was on a playoff team that was #2 in the league last season defending the 3 pointer.
Until we expect better... even if it's only an occasional win at the end of seasons or not being the absolute worst at defense... why would the franchise do much about it?
It's actually a microcosm of the Andrew Wiggins situation. The Wolves are Wiggins... we're Glen Taylor. Have they really deserved the max amount in this situation? Of course not. But we're still rewarding them for ineptitude.
Until we demand more... we deserve this shitty franchise.

Yep I agree, if we were like 23rd in defending the 3 I would be like ok its injuries and not really Ryan's fault but when we have had our two max players in Wiggins and Kat, and All NBA player and possibly 4 of our 5 starters next year starting. Its hard to come up with excuses for having the worst 20 game 3pt stretch in NBA history.
Everyone deserves blame and it is hard for me to give excuses to this franchise when they are literally the worst in NBA history.

How many times do we have to go through this false promise of beating the Warriors and guys finishing strong only to have it not make a bit of difference when it comes to the next season? We need to start caring more about how guys start seasons and less about how they finish them especially when there is not much to play for anymore.
Don't disagree, still nice to see a player that once was solid and who has struggled mightily these last 2 years, to finally have some success even if it is in meaningless games and small sample size.

Of course I hold the players accountable. I might be the biggest Wiggins critic there is, at least one of. I praised him when he had his one good game of the year against OKC. He actually put forth top level effort.
I think it is fairly safe to say no coach at this point can get him to play hard. It's on him and only him. It's been what? 4 coaches now? 5? I'm losing count.
Covington is hurt, he's by far the teams best defender. So yeah, that's going to effect things.
Saric has been mostly underwhleming, not sure if he is the long term starter at the 4 or not. That's up in the air.
KBD and Cam are as green as anyone, yes, I expect the team to suck when they are getting their first legitimate playing time. That's just being realistic.
I expect this team to be on a path to win a championship. Thibs was not on that path, which is why he deserved to lose his job.
Have we seen enough of Ryan to be angry if he is hired on long term? Understanding the circumstances, I'm on the fence. We gave Thibs two off seasons and full control of player personnel (essentially). It was enough time. So is Ryan the answer or not? I don't know. I don't think anyone thrown in mid season gets this team to perform any better likely. So sure, you can blame Ryan some, injuries some, and playing rookies some. Lack of effort by a certain player some as well.

To me, this team repeatedly not showing up to play is a coaching issue. When your guys are just going through the motions and not showing up prepared to play games that has a high level of responsibility on the coach. Pop doesn't just yank his starters out when they shit the bed for the hell of it. He sends them a message that it's not ok to just come not ready to play. It's hard to win in this league. You have to show up and do your job and if you aren't that's on the coach to send you that message that it's not ok to keep repeatedly showing up not ready to play. These guys need an adult in the room otherwise they are just gonna walk all over Ryan to mediocrity because they clearly lack the maturity to do this difficult job on a nightly basis.

You make good points. Yes, I've made them before as well. Thibs/Mitchell/Saunders from day 1 should have been benching Wiggins or anyone else not putting in 100%. I kind of have to single out Wiggins because he's the one who was constantly playing huge minutes over the last 4-5 years while not performing up to a high enough level. Sure, pre contract he was putting in more effort. But then Glen said if Wiggins pinky swore to try he would give him a max deal. Now we know how that went.
In the NBA you have a damned if you do damned if you don't problem as well. Say the coach (pick one) benches Wiggins. Then Wiggins who at the time had all the potential and was a #1 pick and many fan favorite then decides to ask for a trade, or decides the coach needs to go. Players have a lot of say.
Pop of course can somewhat get away with it. But just maybe he rubbed Kawhi the wrong way benching him a few times (I've seen Pop pull the entire starting lineup). Kawhi decides he is out of there. Not saying that for sure happened but it's possible.
Now enter Ryan, he's thrown in mid season and is what 34 years old, the youngest coach in the NBA. Can he really bench Wiggins after no other coach had before at this point and still have Wiggins on his side? It's a gamble, not only that, as bad as the Wolves are, Wiggins is still needed to try win games. The Wolves have no depth on the wing and of course the coach needs to win to keep his job right?
Then you also have a potential media circus around the benching. Is Ryan and Wiggins ready to answer those questions? We already saw how horribly Wiggins reacted to being booed.
Maybe Ryan needs to say pretty please Wiggins will you try hard? lol D:

Your last sentence just makes my point. You shouldn't be a coach in this league if you are resorting to that kind of behavior to motivate players. The only people who would get pushed away with some tough love are not building blocks for a contender anyways because they don't have the level of mutual respect between player and coach you need. If KAT demanded a trade because we sat him to close a game where he didn't bring it then send him out. If you aren't professional and can't handle being actually coached you're never gonna win anyway and you can go be Melo somewhere else.
