Joe Cowley on Barreiro
Just listened to the segment in my car, and it was quite entertaining. Cowley covers the Bulls for the Sun Times (although there are rumors he lives in the Twin Cities, and often finds himself surrounded by controversy. But he is an open interview, and especially interesting because of Wolves' fans current interest in anything Bulls -related. He is an unabashed Thibs and Butler fan, and an equally unabashed Bulls front office hater. Here are some tidbits form today:
1) The Bulls front office is so immature and dislikes Thibs so much that they would not even acknowledge him in public at the combine.
2) For that reason, Cowley thinks any kind of deal (like trading for Butler) between the Wolves and Bulls is impossible.
3) He thinks Butler is one of 4 true 2-way wings in the NBA...along with LeBron, Klay Thompson and Leonard.
4) He thinks Noah and Gasol are definitely gone, and the Bulls cannot afford from a PR standpoint to trade Butler for picks and prospects.
5) Barreiro asked that if Butler did a Love-like demand to be traded, would Zach and #5 get the job done. Cowley said no way...LaVine doesn't have enough cache around the league yet.
6) He did say that the one player (other than untouchable KAT and Wig) that the Bulls really covet is Rubio. Hoiberg loves the way he controls the flow, and they are looking for a way to move Rose to SG.
7) Barreiro asked how Noah would fit here. Cowley loves him, but acknowledged that he has lost a lot the past couple years, and he didn't know if Noah would want to go through what he called "the Thibs experience" again.
Interesting stuff. The board has been split on trading Zach and #5 for Butler (I would do it), but it sounds like it would be a non-starter from the Bulls' standpoint anyway. I would not consider trading Rubio and #5 for Butler, and I'm guessing that nobody but porkchop and Duke would give it a second thought.
Check out the entire interview if you get a chance.

Thanks for the write-up LST.
I'm surprised to hear that bit about Noah. He and Thibs really worked well together in Chicago, I would think that Noah would desire that comfort zone, but maybe the practices and scrimmages are really that bad?

Re: Joe Cowley on Barreiro
I gather from Cowley that Thibs and Noah got along well, although Noah had a few famous quotes about Thibs not understanding the grueling effect of the NBA season. But Noah and Thibs in many ways were made for each other, and made each other better. But while a healthy Noah might somewhat lightheartedly complain about Thibs' in-season practices, the older, oft-injured Noah might not savor the idea of those practices. I'm just guessing because Cowley didn't elaborate about what he meant by "the Thibs experience".

Thanks for the write up. Did you happen to keep listening to what Jon K said later in the show?
As much as ai like Noah unless he came really cheap I'm not that excited about him coming here because we need some healthy bodies.

I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic about Hoiberg wanting Rubio or not but keep in mind Hoiberg was still working for the Wolves when they drafted Rubio in 2009.

I could be wrong, but I think we were both on the sarcastic side...
