Re: Article: Should the Wolves Try to Extend Gorgui Dieng
My excitement with the Thibs hiring has mostly been in regards to the development of KAT and Wiggins. But this article has actually got me really excited to see if he can fix Dieng's defense.
As far as extending Dieng, I agree with the author. If we can get him to sign for less than $14 mil a year then I would try and get it done but anything more makes me a little uneasy. Unless Thibs does unlock something which fixes Dieng's defense we have likely seen what Gorguis ceiling is; I don't think his value would jump too much between this year and the next so there is no harm in waiting to extend him either.
Thanks for posting the article.

It's been reported that Thibs wanted Chicagonto draft Dieng so I would assume he has been a fan for a while. I would also say it seems like Dieng's defensive ceiling the last few months keeps getting higher. First of all he actually improved over the course of the season then his new coach is maybe the best defensive mind in the game. Dieng could get better as a defender. I'm not suggesting he is gonna blow up into an all NBA team defensive player but I don't think he has reached his ceiling yet.
As for an extension for Dieng...man it's just hard to come up with a number and I think that's why it won't happen. On top of that its a new coaching staff and people making decisions. Neither can be sure what Dieng's role will be a few months from now. I just can't imagine Dieng is gonna blow up so much he is gonna get a max type deal so even if a team offers him a ton and the Wolves decide it's worth it ok. The other thing is we don't know who we are drafting yet that could have significant impact on Dieng. The fact that Dieng has played himself into consideration to stick here AND get paid a healthy chunk of money is a good thing. I really hope we keep him.

I just read $14M for Dieng? I need to sit down.
The new NBA is about to get crazy.
Note: anybody ever wish middle income salaries in the u.s. were growing at the same pace as the top couple of percent? Yeah, me neither. Woe

Yes. It would be cheaper and easier to extend him than wait til he become a free agent. I would start with a 4yr 48m offer and not go beyond 14m. This sounds high right now but would be the norm in a few years and he will get bigger offer when he becomes a free agent.

Why on earth would you even consider extending Dieng before being active in free agency? That's my question. It also depends on what role you think he fills. To me, I still see him as an ideal big off the bench. That means that my contract offer would be different than someone else's who believes he's our starting center.

Nobody said that. I think the intention would be to look at free agents in the summer and try to negotiate a reasonable extension with Dieng around the start of the season.

I think Gorgui is a starting caliber PF playing alongside a star center and Allstar caliber SF. Gorgui rebounds, blocks shots and passes. He has a very accurate short to mid-range jumper and has shown 3/point range. He is also highly competitive.
He's no Millsap or Horford but he doesn't have to be because we wouldn't need him to be one of top 2 players - or even our top 3 or 4 guy.
I'd definitely wait until after the draft and free agency before doing anything with Gorgui. But unless we sign a free agent PF in his mid to late 20s who is better than Gorgui, I'd offer offer the 4-year $48 million.

How high would I go? I'd go as high as 4 years $64 million. Under the new salary cap that's on par with Pek's contract and it would be for a better all-around and MUCH more durable player.
Looking at Tristan Thompson's 5 year $85 million, Vucevic's 4 year $48 million, and Henson's 4 year $44 million deals under the old cap, 4-year $64 million is a very fair market price for Gorgui under the new cap.
But our front office will have to project team payroll a few years out based on the assumption that Towns and Wiggins get max contracts and that LaVine gets a big non-max deal.

Re: Article: Should the Wolves Try to Extend Gorgui Dieng
Dieng should be retained. I think many have big plans for this summer but I am betting that many players will have plan A be staying put and getting the 5th year and hoping to convince a homie to come join them. Some teams might hit it big but I am expecting a lot of status quo when it comes to the big names. This will leave some teams scrambling and even the sense of desperation and a lackluster class the following summer could bring visions of big dollars into the eyes of players like Dieng and Bazz who could take a qualifying offer and get mondo bucks if they do not like what their home team is offering. Best to get the job done this summer even if its for a few extra dollars. He will likely get it somewhere. Even if the Wolves do happen to strike gold with someone like Horford, hopefully Taylor is open to extending Gorgs to bolster depth. I am sure Thibs will request it.
