Box Plus Minus

Post by Wolvesfan21 »

Seems like a fairly accurate stat, after all Jordan leads the all time list followed by LeBron and Magic.

Chris Paul is 4th though, which is surprising.

As far as Wolves this season.

KAT 6.4
Vandy 0.9
Naz 0.1
DLO 0.0
Beasley -0.4

Everyone else pretty terrible.

BPM and PER are very box score-centric and generally reward "counting" stats, like rebounds, assists, and points. So it comes with all the usual caveats of not taking into account things like defense (except blocks, steals, and defensive rebounds), ball movement, setting good screens, taking a charge, etc.

Things like RAPM, RPM, and PIPM try to evaluate overall on-court impact while controlling variables such as who your team mates are, etc. But this can get a bit noisy too.

I like to look at both +/- related stats and box-score centric stats to make an overall assessment.

But no matter how you look at things, we have KAT and then a massive gulf between him and whoever the next best player is, no matter who you come up with. And that's a problem because KAT isn't even among the top 15 players in the NBA right now (we'll see how he looks later this season assuming he can get 20+ games - may be he has turned a corner on defense?).

Right it's not perfect seeing a guy like Chris Paul is 4th all time! Not to disrespect him he is and has been a great player of course but I'd argue Durant and Leonard have had better careers/better players. Maybe if you take an avg of BPM, PER, RAPM, RPM and PIPM you can get an all around accurate stat to rate a players overall impact on wins/losses.

Of course KAT only played 4 games but I was a little shocked to see how poorly nearly every Wolves player is. Though many are so young like Edwards and McDaniels, even Vandy that if any of them pan out and DO actually improve then we may have something as a team.

I looked up LeBrons BPM as a Rookie just to compare and get an idea he was 1.7 on the BPM rating while Edwards is -6.0 I think. But Edwards has seemed to turn a corner, hopefully he can be consistent and continue to progress the rest of the season.

I like to look at Plus Minus (NBA.com) in its purest form over the formulaic derivatives which can get wonky.
