Monte Morris

Post by KG4Ever »

I would love to acquire Monte Morris. He is stuck on Denver's bench and is a point guard who could blossom as a starter. He is stuck behind Jamaal Murray. He has elite assist/turnover rate, shoots 40% from the perimeter and is a plus player with better plus/minus stats than Murray. He is only 24 and is on a minimum salary deal. He won't be a free agent until the 2021 offseason, but we should have a lot of capspace then if we don't blow our capspace on someone like DLO. The benefit of waiting is that we wouldn't have to give up any trade assets and we could probably sign him on a relatively bargain contract akin to what top backup point guards get.

I certainly wouldnt' trade any core players for him (KAT, Wiggs, Cov, Culver and would be reluctant to trade KCP given that this might be a breakout year for him). I'm on the fence about Okogie, but certainly everyone else is available. Alternatively, I'd be ok with offering a top 16 protected pick with full first round protection in any doubledraft year or first round swap rights of any non-top 10 pick.

Denver has so much depth that they are going to have to trade off players or lose them to free agency in the off-season: Malik Beasley is stuck behind Gary Harris and he on on the trading block and I like him too (though not as much as Morris). Juancho Hernangomez is also someone buried on Denver's roster who could help us. All these guys are young, versatile and can shoot and should be on our free agent target lists in the off-season.

I agree that Denver has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to rotation-worthy players, many of whom are on cheap deals. Monte Morris is certainly one of them. He's basically Tyus Jones with a 3-point shot, which would be pretty damn valuable for us.

Speaking of Denver, it looks like Jokic has taken a step back. He's just 24, but I've always thought of him as a little bit out of shape by today's NBA standards. I wonder if he's starting to get a little winded and worn down as teams increasingly try to play faster?

Yeah... a lot of guys have either stagnated or even regressed on the Nuggets...

... yet they're still on pace for what would be the 2nd best record in the history of the Timberwolves.

Ouch.

They are a team that has a nice quantity of solid players. We've had KG, Love, and KAT - all of whom were/are solid #1 options in their time with us that could get you the 20+ PPG and 10-12+ RPG (and in KG's case, elite team defense). But man, we have struggled mightily with then finding the right guys to play next to those players and to find enough of them.

One player on Denver who is getting older and playing fewer minutes, but is no less effective, is Paul Milsap. That guy is their version of Al Horford - always in the right position defensively, makes open shots, can bully-ball a smaller player in the paint if necessary. The dude is just so, so solid and they are a much weaker team when he doesn't play.

I do question Denver's upside though. Jokic can only do so much and Murray's ceiling isn't much higher. I just don't know if they have the star power to contend, but yeah, I'd love the Wolves to be this good some day.

In today's way of following the NBA... many media pundits (thus fans) would be screaming to blow it up because the title is the only thing that matters.

Personally, I disagree with that.

[Note: Maybe because I'm a fan of a team that can't even make the f-ing playoffs for chrissakes so it's not even reasonable to suggest a title.]

For this franchise, making the playoffs IS the title.

The last time we made the playoffs didn't seem anything like winning a title. In fact, I was hoping we wouldn't make the playoffs as I think the Wolves could have dumped Thibs earlier if we hadn't squeaked in. To me its all about expectations and given how depleted our roster is this year and that we are focused on developing Culver at the cost of some winning, it would be an accomplishment to get in the playoffs. But, honestly I'm taking the longer view and I just want to see our players develop and not look to make any quick fix trades that would cripple our future capspace or cost us future draft picks.

So waiting 15- to 20- years for that elusive legit playoff berth...

Our patience isn't being rewarded... being asked to be more patience is really not what I want.

I've followed the team since 1989. Fuck patience. Just figure it out Glen Taylor and Co. It can't be THAT hard considering literally EVERY other NBA franchise has done a better job of things than the Wolves.
