Tank Status Tracking
Tank Status Tracking
It's time for a thread to track the status of the Wolves tanking strategy this season. I'll start by noting that if the season ended today, February 25, the Wolves would rank 3rd in the lottery and well positioned for a top 4 pick.
I see one true prize in this year's draft and it's Wiseman. He's projected to go anywhere from 1 to 3. So if he's the the target, the Wolves need to continue what appears to be a very effective tanking strategy so far. :)

I predict we'll have this same thread next year around this time.

Two 7-footers in a league where other teams are finding success going small...
Ok. But does Rosas have it in him to be more than Morey's copycat bobo... and revolutionize the game vs. the trend?

Re: Tank Status Tracking
Is this where I post the Timberwolves track record of tanking?
Nobody... NOBODY... does it better.
2010: 1 - 23 to end the season.
2011: 0 - 15 to end the season.
2012: 1 - 13 to end the season.
2015: 0 - 12 to end the season (nearly 0-21... if not for two OT wins... one vs. a 14-win Knicks team that played Alexey Shved 43 minutes!)
2017: 0 - 6 (3 - 13 down the stretch)
2018: 4 - 11
Now, let's remember that there are several organizations that have not lost 10 games in a row since 2010. Will the Wolves have 2 or 3 or 4 such streaks this season?
[Note: And obviously... as soon as the Wolves brass told those teams to start "chasing wins" those same players who were told that losing was cool... suddenly turned it around and we became WINNERS! Or something...]

Re: Tank Status Tracking
Are we skipping over Edwards because of positional fit? I sure hope not. I agree a shot blocking big would be nice next to Towns, but our wings are hardly stars too. I'd still draft any position for this team.

I've given up finding and developing shooters in the draft. You don't have to develop size and space eaters. I'd go with Wiseman and then take Nesmith from Vandy with the jersey pick. I like Mannion but I think he'll be gone.

And herein lies the problem. If there is no consensus of a top player or top 4 players, the idea of tanking is pretty much useless. Not that I ever advocate it, but especially not when no can even identify who the true prizes are.

Anthony Edwards has all the natural talent in the world and great physical makeup to boot, but his shot selection is atrocious and his ability to remain engaged on the court is iffy at best. If you read that and shivered at the thought of having to watch that kind of player again, I'm right there with you. I don't think he's a winning player at the next level. Looks the part, talks the talk, but essentially won't be "that guy." He's still in the top-10 for me, but mainly on tools, talent, and the theory of potential. Based on where we should be drafting, I'd look elsewhere or look to trade the pick to a suitor who might want Edwards more than they probably should.
