Re: NBA season suspended
Yeah, I feel bad for all of the kids that now won't experience things like spring sports, orchestra trips, graduation ceremonies, vacations, etc. My daughter's trip to Scotland this summer got canceled and my son's spring track season has been canceled. It's the right thing to do, but it just kinda sucks.
On the other hand, I try to look at the positives and upsides of such crises. For example, my son and a bunch of friends got together for a spontaneous game of basketball at a local park because track practice was canceled. May be in our world of overly-structured and planned activities, the idea of spontaneous play will re-emerge again. Or to Monster's point, may be going to the library to check out books will be cool again. It gets you out of the house and gives you something to do once back home! Or how about cooking for yourself/your family instead of rushing to get takeout or going out to eat?
Who knows how long this thing will last, but one thing I know: Things will get better eventually!

Q - I like your positive take. As you pointed out, things will eventually get better. And in the meantime, perhaps we'll discover or re-discover some simpler pleasures that we've lost touch with over the years. I love the story of your son and friends getting together for a spontaneous game of basketball. That takes me back all the way to my childhood when that happened nearly every day during the summer - basketball, baseball or football.

Agreed great post Q. I went into my office this morning to drop off my timecard and ended up being there for a few minutes chatting and joking about the whole situation. Living through this could change how people consider community. Maybe it will have some sort of positive effect on this seemingly fractured world.
Also I joked about books but I do want to say that part of my job included a few hours at the Library each week. Books are still alive and well used by people of all ages. Also Libraries are such an amazing resource to communities. I wonder how long they are going to be able to stay open or what limited services they will provide.

All of which people should be doing daily anyways. The fact of the matter is this breakout is less of a threat than influenza despite there being no cure for it yet. Continue to live your lives as you have been. It will all sort itself out.
I'm not a medical professional, but my wife is. Based on what I've read and what my wife has told me, this virus is more contagious/transmissible than influenza, lives far longer in the environment (in the air and on surfaces) and has a much higher mortality rate. And 20% of those who become ill with Coronavirus require medical intervention. That's a huge percentage. Furthermore, unlike influenza, this virus may not diminish with warm weather. Yes, those over 60 and with preexisting health problems are far more likely to become critically ill or die, but that's a lot of people in this Country. Influenza is bad, but this has the potential to be worse. If this isn't contained, it could overwhelm our medical system, including hospitals, and cause severe economic harm.
The NBA and NCAA have never shut down their seasons over the flu or any other illness. Those organizations are big, sophisticated businesses with huge financial stakes in continuing to operate. They wouldn't shut down based solely on hype. They have access to the world's leading experts and the best information. Their decisions to shut down speak volumes about how serious this is or could become.
We can't stop living our lives or barricade ourselves in our homes. But we need to take this very seriously and take extra precautions to avoid getting it or infecting others, including others like our relatives or friends who are over 60 or have underlying health issues. That's my view anyway.
Boy, I'm high as a kite after reading this.

How is everyone doing out there? Social distancing like pros?
Its gotten a bit more real for me the last couple days with a sickness scare at work which didn't run out to be COVID 19 (that would be a sick jersey) and now its possible I may not have any work hours along with many other co-workers. All this is totally unprecedented. I'm concerned and a bit anxious but I know it will be alright somehow. I was planning to dump a bunch of money in my IRA but...

I have a co-worker that has COVID19. He works out of his home in Colorado. He is in his late 50's. He said the fever is gone, but still has a cough. The worst part is the quarantine. The worst part of the quarantine is his wife is driving him crazy.
The worst part has been not being able to go to workout. I have a nice home gym, but just don't have the same motivation. I have seen an uptick in the kids using the sports court. My stepdaughter was putting up shots last night.

Re: NBA season suspended
Thanks for reaching out Monster (and for not touching!).
- Work hasn't slowed down much because I'm in an industry that is impacted in a neutral to positive way by what is going on. My heart goes out to folks that work in the airline, travel, hospitality, entertainment, etc. sectors. I'm able to work from home, but come into a mostly empty office, where I tend to be more productive.
- Kids' school has been suspended for now and they are mostly making due. I'd echo Bleed's comment about kids getting outside more. I'm skeptical that the schools open their doors again this academic year.
- I don't know anyone personally that has COVID-19. The draconian measures we're all taking should hopefully keep it this way.
- My guess is things get a little worse before getting better, as the known virus cases lags the measures taken to slow it down. Hopefully the full force of all these social distancing and large gathering restrictions really kicks in starting next week and we start seeing the trend of new cases decrease. But I expect the next few days to continue seeing a surge in new cases.
- Things DO get better. Look at the trends in China and South Korea.
- Having said that, digging out of the economic damage is going to take time. And there may not be a full re-instatement of normalcy until a vaccine is developed, which is going take 12-18 months. But I do think a gradual loosening of restrictions will begin in 3 or 4 weeks.
Hang in there everyone!

Good to hear from some of you.
I'm not the nervous or paranoid type but...I think this is going to go on MUCH longer than people anticipate. I think this is going to be a more than a few more weeks. There for sure will be no rest of this school year I would bet on that. I read that any vaccine is over a year away because it takes that long to make sure it doesn't hurt more than it helps.
I think there are going to be some tough economic times ahead for many people. I'm home working on selling off all the stuff that I was going to get around to but hadn't. So...I'm kinda working from home at my side hustle I guess.
I haven't gotten too stir crazy yet but I'm guessing it will come in a couple days. Until yesterday my life was mostly the same as usual so that part hasn't really hit too...much yet.

I can see by May having restaurants open and kids back in school. We can't stop it, but are just flattening the curve of people that need urgent medical attention that gets it. There seems to be a lot off promise coming out recently on drugs to combat it. The FDA is under the gun here and needs to be swift in approvals.

Thanks for posting
The first article it says all options are a 1 or a year and half away.
2nd one seems to have some side affects that are concerning but seems somewhat promising. Not sure the US would OK it.
3rd...still seems to be a ways away. Somewhat promising,
It takes a long time to ok a medicine/drugs and for good reason. I've been part of few medical tests myself. I miss that money...hmmm
I have serious doubts that after the first few week things will be able to go mostly back to normal. If a lot of people get this thing we are gonna be screwed. after a few weeks people will still be able to get this. That's not going to change. What would be the point of getting back to school for like 4 weeks? Makes no sense to me. Since this is a sports forum...its like getting your star player back for the last 10 games in a lost NBA season. Makes no sense. Just sit it out. Why are things turning in China? All the measures that have been taken that weren't done earlier are being effective.
