Taylor Speaks!

Post by 60WinTim »

Thibs runs such a tight ship we don't get any info. But fortunately, we have Taylor who can't help but talk! This was printed a few days ago, but I don't think anyone posted it anywhere...

Maybe when the interview was done Glen made it sound to the person writing this like they were really looking at trading the pick but that quote he really didn't say anything. Basically all he said was they are looking at all options to improve the entire roster and it seemed more I respect to the whole offseason not just the draft. He didn't reveal anything more than Thibs would. Some people will probably be encouraged to hear that Glen and Thibs and Layden don't think the guy they pick at 7 is gonna help a lot this season.

Glen confirmed they had a doctor basically say Pek isn't healthy to play and now are waiting for the NBA doctor to do the same.

He also doesn't know where the Rubio trade rumors are coming from.

The Mankato doofus strikes again. I'm surprised he didn't say exactly who we're trying to trade for.

He really is a doofus. GT is living proof that anyone can become wealthy in America. Maybe he did say who we're going to trade for and the interviewer took pity on him and decicided not to disclose the name.

You're right about what Glen seems to have actually said. But he shouldn't be telling the world that our front office is considering trading our #7 pick for a player. I'm sure most NBA teams assume that's happening, but you want to keep them guessing for maximum leverage. When an owner says he just talked to our front office execs and then says they're considering such a trade scenario it carries a lot of weight and suggests (probably correctly) that our front office would prefer to trade the pick for a vet. And Glen didn't just mention that scenario as being considered, he went on to suggest a level of impatience that I don't think Thibs and Layden would want the rest of the NBA to know.

If I were the owner, I'd want to publicly convey a sense of patience. I'd also want to help create a narrative that we expect to improve in the short term through free agency and that we'd prefer to augment our long term talent by keeping the 7th pick. I've negotiated a lot of major deals over my career and even though the other side often has a sense of what you want or are willing to do, they never know for sure and you always benefit to the extent you can get them to question their assumptions. That's why I give a lot of credit to Thibs and Layden for keeping such a tight grip on information. In one short interview, Glen Taylor undermined that effort. He really is an idiot.

I'm not clear on the implications of getting and NBA doctor's certification that Pek can't play next to season. The article simply mentions the insurance implications -- insurance picking up 80% of Pek's salary. But there was no mention of whether that certification will lead to a medical retirement that would take Pek's final season salary off our books for cap purposes. That would have interesting information from our owner. Sadly, I'm not sure Glen even knows about the medical retirement option.

I had thought they were holding off so they would not increase the amount of money they had to dole out to the current players to meet the minimum salary floor. However, I just read in Larry's FAQ that the money they dole out is computed based on the salaries at the time the last regular season game was played. Which means they were able to begin the medical retirement process after their last game. Taylor said they have their doctor's prognosis and are now waiting for an NBA appointed doctor to confirm the prognosis.

I wonder if this means the Wolves can add another 11 mil to their available cap space before the draft, and thus make a draft day trade where they can take back 20+ mil in salary?

People just have their expertise I guess. Glen's is lace doilies, porcelain figurines, and greeting cards. Not basketball.

I can't see any trades I want to make unless its to take a guy who could make our rotation and get a draft pick too I do not want to give up pick 7 unless its to moved for another pick in the 5 to 10 range (and only back if all top 3 wings are off board). Harkless, Demarre Carroll and Danny Green are all guys I'd happily take on as long as we aren't giving up a draft pick to facilitate cap space for other teams.
