Indeed. And Jamychal.
What are you willing to pay those guys to get them away from their teams? I like both but I worry it's gonna cost enough money Millsap and Ibaka start looking like guys we should pay and I am gonna say here and now we should not pay either of those guys (Millsap and Ibaka) big money.
It's a great question, monster, and I can only give you a strategy...not a dollar amount. Layden needs to earn his salary here by coming up with the upper end we can afford to pay without risking losing any of our big 3 if they all pan out. Thibs and Layden need to proforma what the roster might look like in two years...who they want to keep, who they want to let go, and who they want to add. Then, they need to estimate what the cap and lux threshold will be then, and determine how far Glen and his minority investors are willing to go over that threshold. That will determine what we can pay a free agent this year. It's a math exercise (with some estimation involved), and I'm guardedly optimistic our management team is pretty good at it because I think they went through the sane exercise last year...resulting in some free agent discipline that looks very good a year later.
If we're talking about the five possible SF candidates I mentioned above, I think we actually may be in a favorable position vis a vis other teams. We would be offering each of those guys a chance to join a roster that some say has the best young talent in the league, and the chance to be the starting forward...something they are not doing on their current teams. That's a pretty attractive offer, as long as we can make the money part work.
