Re: Wolves 2017 Draft Thread
I think Monk has the makings of instant offense off the bench. While his height isn't ideal, he has off the charts athleticism and his shooting is by far the best in the draft. It was standard practice for him to drain 3s 5 feet behind the 3 point line. This is what separates him from Markkanen as a shooter. Markkanen was a solid college 3 point shooter, but simply didn't show the range Monk did this season.
I just watched several highlight videos, and I see why Fox has climbed. Man, his floor seems pretty high despite a less than ideal shot. He is simply so good at other aspects of the game, I feel like he will be a very good player. His speed, athleticism and defense are all going to be elite. And I think he will actually score the ball very well utilizing skills getting to the hoop....but will certainly be a poor 3 point shooter.

I'll swim out to Monk island. There were times this year when scouts had them as their top prospect. I can get on board with that. If his biggest flaw is size that doesn't scare me.

The thing that always sticks in my mind with Monk is the UNC game where he just got shut down by Justin Jackson. Jackson is a decent athlete, but he's not a great athlete and stifled Monk all game long until the end of the game when Monk hit a couple circus shots. Monk couldn't get around him at all so I question the notion he's an off the charts athlete with the ball in his hands. Maybe that's an extreme example of what it takes to stop him, but it does limit his ceiling IMO. He also runs a little too hot and cold to me. He can absolutely take over a game, but he can absolutely be invisible as well which is a big spectrum. I'd like a little more consistency from him.

Those are valid concerns, although all the prospects available to us at 7 will have question marks.
I am not going to let one game change my mind on a player. The guy scored 47 against the same team during the season, although it didn't look like Jackson was guarding him then. Great move by UNC in the NCAAs. Kentucky really needed Monk to be their go-to-guy most of the season, and UNC was able to adjust.

I don't see a lot of exceptional ball handling from Monk. He is more than just a shooter but how much more? Idk.

I agree. There is a lot of room for improvement.
But you don't always see guys that can shoot the ball like he does, and are very athletic. Great opportunity at #7 if he is still on the board.

I'd like a more well rounded player (yep everyone is gonna have flaws) but getting a volume 3 point shooter on the roster certainly isn't a terrible thing.

The good news is the 2nd tier of prospects goes down to pick 8, so ITWT.
In Thibs We Trust.

The funny think is people always say Thibs wants defense, tough guys or whatever. Of course then the conventional wisdom that's out there is he wants a score first PG. My guess is Thibs wants good players that will compete and work hard to get better. It's obviously not that simple but I think sometimes people typecast a little too simply what guys are Thibs guys and who aren't.
Dunn seems like a Thibs guy though and while people can say they didn't get that pick right honestly unless you are the Bucks and picked Brogdon nobody really blew anyone away till maybe later in the year when some guys were also playing legit mi utes for playoff teams. I'm not all that impressed with this draft but I still think we can absolutely get a valuable player at 7. How confident do I feel? Idk it's hard to say it really depends on who is available.

Oh, absolutely agreed. Thibs wants guys that will put in the effort to make the team better. Dunn was not a special player last year, but I would still take him where we picked last year. Simply because his defensive upside is so high. I think we all see Defense as a need at this point, so having Dunn going forward is a plus.
We have a decent offense. On that end the only major thing we need are role players that can hit open 3s.
