It's a little surprising to me how far down he is in DX's mock draft considering the numbers he's put up, but I think the concern is how he'd defend in a pace and space NBA where bigs need to be able to guard out on the perimeter. Of course, guys like Enes Kanter and Zach Randolph seem to be doing just fine destroying people off the bench.
Here are the the negatives as I see them and look at his stats and draft profile.
1. Moves well and is like you said "man amongst boys" but he isn't explosive athletically. You pointed out some guys that aren't jumping out of the gym but that tends to knocks guys down when it comes to potential.
2. Isn't a shot blocker and therefore not likely a rim protector. That probably goes with his lack of explosion...plus
3. He has the lengthis a PF 6.5" in shoes 7'3.5" wingspan but only a 8'11" standing reach. So...we are talking about a somewhat limited physical profile right espcially if he is guarding centers or PFs.
Still the guys is killing it in a lot of ways (just looked at his stats this year) scoring, rebounding and doing it crazy efficiently all the way out on the 3 point line where he shots it easy. He was only 5-15 in this game but he still had 14-14 with 6 assists (4 TOS). NE was doubling him and Haas nearly every time. McVeigh was espcially terrific for a stretch with the double causing problems with his length. The stats may not show it but NE was creating some serious havoc on Purdue for stretches although did hit a bunch of 3's. I'll be interested to see how Swanigan finishes up the year and what he plans to do.
I'm also still curious how AJ Hammonds does as he is on The Mavs roster and hasn't played much. It looks from the stats there have been some players ahead of him on the roster that have played well in their minutes. That's a good place for him to develop I give him a 50/50 chance of being a worthwhile rotation big which honestly is being optimistic.
