I know some people say the Wolves are going country club for adding guys back to help but it doesn't mean those guys are idiots either. I also think Wittman seemed to chill out a bit the last few months he was on the job for the Wizards. I don't think Ryan needs innovators he needs guys that have been there done that. He doesn't really have anyone like that on his coaching staff except maybe Ed P. Also worth noting Layden is running things as GM...but who knows if he will be here in a few months. There is no assurity that Randy Wittman will be here either in any capacity.
It's an interesting and worthwhile point to mention Ryan's coaching tree. His GM tree isn't exactly top shelf either. I mean who was the best basketball mind he has worked with period?
One thing I learned a few years ago was to be successful you have to have a few things going for you. First you just need to have a base level of comptetence and then if you have great ideas and successful concepts...you still have to be able to effectively communicate those to people you are coaching but also your colleagues and people above you as well. That can be difficult. So even if Ryan is the guy with ideas that are different and good can he effectively communicate those AND will he have some of the right people around him and above him that will support him and help move the team in a positive direction? Hard to know. Only time will tell.
Monster - Great analysis. I agree completely on the importance of communication to be successful. The jury is out on Ryan. I really want him to succeed.
One factor to keep in mind is KAT's feelings affection for Ryan, which stems in part from KAT's feelings for and loyalty to Flip. Ryan presence here as our head coach is a bit of a hedge against the Wolves' worst-case scenario - namely ending up in an Anthony Davis situation where KAT demands a trade. If the team continues to fall short of anything better than an 8th seed and quick playoff exist, then KAT will eventually demand a trade before the end of his contract. Having Ryan as head coach mitigates that risk a bit. Ryan's presence here in that role could buy the Wolves an extra year perhaps to get on track before KAT makes the dreaded demand.
I would say we don't know the relationship between Kat and Saunders yet. Twice on TV, Kat has been seen telling Ryan get the fuck away from me. It's something to monitor.
Yeah, I dont know if KAT and ryan are as close.
we do know Ryan and wiggs are close.
we do know wiggs and KAT are close.
we do know KAT and rose are becoming close.
Other than that i think everyone just gets along.
A couple of saunders quote of how he relates to players.
"Saunders on Wiggins today:
"Just being around him, you learn what can work for certain guys. No two people are the same in terms how you might want to get something out of them. When it comes to players, you have to handle people differently. I have some things with Andrew."
"One thing I like about Ryan Saunders' responses when asked about Andrew Wiggins -- related to engagement, impact, floating, etc. -- is that he asks for you trust that he know Andrew *the person* well.
Its about wiggs, but Im sure it applies to all the member of this club.
