So if you want to know what Thibodeau really thinks about the type of team he wants, just look at the players he's pursued and acquired -- Butler, Gibson, Teague, Rose, Crawford, MGH, Cole Aldrich, and now Trevor Booker and Amir Johnson. Actually, I'm not sure there's a clear pattern here other than the fact that none of these players are known for taking a lot of threes and only one of them, Teague, has shot well from behind the arc over his career. None of these players are known for playing up-tempo offense either and none of them are rim-protectors. I'd like to think all or most of these guys are known for their defense, but Teague, Rose and Crawford have never been known for the defense. Other than his affinity for his favorite former Bulls, I'm not sure what to make of Thibodeau's approach to personnel as PBO.
Yeah, difficult to see any pattern in those acquisitions. I guess you might call it "players who can tolerate Thibs is he's willing to overpay them".
I would also argue that even Teague was not considered much of a 3-point threat when we got him...he's averaged making less than 1 three per game throughout his career at a 35.7 percentage.
Are whole Summer League Team is filled with 3pt shooters. We worked out European sniper. We tried to sign Gerald Green. We have contacted J.Bird and Tolliver. We need 3 pt shooting no doubt but the price of 3 pt shooters is at an all time high. I mean Doug Mccdermott is getting paid 7 mil a year for 3 years. We don't have money, plan and simple.
The problem is this is our 3rd offseason with Thibs in charge knowing its a glaring need. He's had plenty of opportunities to figure out a way to address it, but he keeps prioritizing vet signings that don't have this skillset. We simply aren't going to win 50+ games by out free-throwing people and constantly trying to jam the ball into a crowded paint area.

Um....3 point shooter...your previous post was about Gerald Green have you gone full LST? :) #fullporkchop #porkchoplegend
Also Wolfson reported Thibs talked directly to Tolliver.
Lol. Well Monster, I'm not quite full LST, but I'll admit I'm getting close. :) OK, there's one exception named Gerald Green. He's a career 36% 3-point shooter. I actually wanted to pursue him last season with our 15th roster spot, but Thibs didn't. Not sure how hard Thibs pursued him this summer and not sure I'd trust Doogie's report that he did. In that case, I shouldn't trust Doogie's report that the Wolves are pursuin Amir Johnson. However, I do believe the report we're pursuing Booker because it came from someone other than Doogie. :) As for Tolliver, I don't consider him a high-volume three-point shooter. He's similar to Teague as a relatively low-volume 37% 3-point shooter. Not bad. I'd certainly like him.
By the way, Gerald Green was one of the guys David Thorpe thought would absolutely be like oil and water with Thibs. Thibs the GM tends to sign guys that don't blend well with Thibs the Coach, with the sole exception of former Bulls.

Yeah, I like the 3-point capabilities of our SL team...should be fun to watch. And I agree that money is the main reason we're not targeting any free agents this summer that could "move the needle". But doesn't Thibs bear a lot of the responsibility for the salary cap bind we find ourselves in? While I was fully on board with the Butler move last summer (and still support it), essentially swapping Teague for Rubio (not to mention Teague's longer contract) looks really bad this summer as we covet someone who can make a 3. And even though Gibson had a great season, his bloated contract (especially combined with Gorgui's) also isn't helping us this summer. Had Thibs done what I advocated for last summer (acquire Butler, but keep Rubio with his more attractive contract and don't overpay Gibson), we would easily be sitting on enough cap space this summer to attract a sharpshooting wing or 2 who could really help with our 3-point woes. Water under the bridge, I know, but it hurts to have to sit on the free agent sidelines this summer because of a couple impulsive moves last summer.

That's exactly right. It seems that Thibodeau the PBO somehow knows what he needs to do, but while he has talked about it, he has a really hard time getting himself to do it. So he continues to pursue and sign vets who lack the key skill sets he says and seems to know we need. As a result, he's failed to bring in any high-volume 3-point shooting specialists and has signed multiple players who are poor to mediocre defenders - Crawford and Teague -- as major parts of the core rotation. It's just strange.
Looks like the Knicks are offering a 1 year deal with part of the MLE to Super Mario, anyone think he can turn it around on another team. Coming into the draft everyone seemed to love the Lavine like swagger Mario seemed to have. Would anyone have interest trying to grab him on a two year deal?

If you're talking about Chalmers, I'm not interested. His effort comes and goes.

Lip you may want to look up Tollivers stats espcially when it comes to volume on 3's. He takes almost twice as many 3's per 36 as Teague. Last year with Detroit he took 7.5 threes per 36 minutes. That's plenty.

monsterpile wrote:Lip the way the hypothetical deal going past 2 years would work for KBD doesn't have to be more than the vet min it just can't be using the vet min exception because you can only do 2 years with the vet min exemption. So you can pay that same amount of money but not use the exemption but instead use cap space or another exception like the MLE. That's what the Clippers did with both Evans and Thornwell their 2nd round picks last summer. I didn't get the logistics exactly till last week so just hopefully clarifying for you as well. :) regardless this is all some pretty tight money and yet i think the Wolves could end up upgrading their roster via FA market this summer because there are other teams that are gonna run out of money also.
That's right, Monster. The point isn't using the exception. We don't need to use the exception to sign a 2nd round draft pick. My point is that we're likely to pay KBD more than the minimum if we sign him to a multi-year deal. And what we pay him will count towards the total salary that affects whether we exceed the luxury tax threshold.
The Wolves could pay more than the vet min but I doubt they will and likely won't have to to get it done if KBD is open to it which if I was him and his agent I would take a deal if it guaranteed me to get NBA money for even just 2 years at the vet min.
