This probably means Okogie just got bumped out of the rotation, at least to start the season.
Okogie is the only guy who can play defense
Okogie is the only guy who can play defense on that second unit so I would expect his minutes to be fine. This seems like an injury signing so when Rose or Jimmy go down we at least have a spot up shooter to throw out there.
We'll see. I like Okogie's potential defensively, but he seemed a bit over zealous to me when I watched him in Vegas. I actually think lack of 3-point shooting and good spacing on offense is what causes some of our defensive problems to begin with, so I think Nunnally is ahead of him in the rotation....at least to start the season.
It feels like there are some options although not much is proven. To me the question is whether these guys can compliment each other. If they do it would be big for all of them and the team. If Nunnally comes in and plays solid basketball I think you might be right and he will play. Unless Okogie is pretty much a disaster I think Thibs is gonna get him some minutes here and there.

Rose and//or Butler will get injured at some point, so yeah, Okogie is going to get his shot. Euroleague is definitely a couple notches better than top tier D-1 play, so I have to believe Nunnally gets the first crack as our backup wing. He's paid his dues. If he was behind a rookie in the rotation to start the year, I'm not sure why he'd sign here. Thibs must have told him that it's his job to lose.

It sounds like he wanted a legit shot at an NBA roster and right now it seems pretty likely he will stick on this roster throughout the season unless...he sucks or some crazy stuff happens with a trade or some good players get bought out or something. I would guess Thibs and Layden said he has a legit chance to compete for a role off the bench. I used to think the top Euro leagues were far and away better than D/G league but I think the gap is closing somewhat because NBA teams are taking that more seriously and it's moving closer to a minor league system. The last 2 years though Nunnally has been playing with a contending Europe team and playing a role much like he would do here. I'm going to watch the Euroleague final here soon to see him in some game action as well as Luka.
my only concern about this signing is that he'll wind up like Troy Daniels where we sign a shooter but discourage him from shooting. Let him do what he does best.
With that said, very good chance 5 of our players are gonna be in Iowa more often than not (Williams, Terrell, Okogie, Bates-Diop, Patton). That's more than a third of our roster playing for the other Wolves team
C Towns /Dieng
PF Gibson /Tolliver
SF Butler /Nunnally
SG Wiggins /Rose
PG Teague /Jones

I get where you are coming from on Daniels. The mistake was moving on from him, he still took over 9 3's per 36 mins with the Wolves which is a career low but not by that much. A quick look at advanced stats has him as a pretty poor defender the last 3 years. Nunnally needs to be able to make 3's and be a functional player otherwise including on defense. Hopefully Tolliver gets up a bunch of 3's.
A massive upgrade over Bazz and Crawford who strangely Thibs had hard-ons for. I'm still a bit skeptical of the 3 and D tag as I have read that his defense isn't all that good. Hopefully, he can be better than Rudez was.
monsterpile wrote:This signing in theory makes perfect sense. The Wolves need shooting. They need complimentary players. This describes exactly what Nunnally has been doing in Europe for a couple years. He has been playing for a very good team winning lots of games and playing for a tough well respected coach. Supposedly he was a defensive player also so we will see. Looking for international players like this was one route I thought the Wolves should and would explore. Now we have him. Will it work out? Only time will tell. One positive is that teams like Boston, Portland and Houston had interest. All of those teams have had some success at the ends of their rosters. It's our turn. If he can just hit spot up 3's and not be a below average defender and play relatively smart Basketball...well that will help quite a bit and if he does we have him locked in for dirt cheap for 2 years.
I agree, Monster. This was the terrific move by our front office. Now we'll see how it pans out.
I just watched a full game from this last season when Nunnally played quite a few minutes. It had some fun moments in general that made it worth my time.

Here are my thoughts.
First of all there are a number of players most basketball fans would recognize from playing in the NBA previously. Wanamaker a teammate of Nunnally was signed by the Celtics. If anyone is a bit curious about why they signed him he is a PG or combo guard that probably fits well in their heavy switching scheme. Supposedly other playoff teams were interesting in him. I'd guess he is the replacement for Shane Larkin. He should be able to improve on that.
Ok now to Nunnnally. I'll go with some negatives first. There were times he got blown by on defense. He isn't wildly quick so yeah some guys are going to get past him. He had some bad turnovers. A couple of these were when he tried to isolate and do something. A couple times he did too much. He wasn't alone they had over 20 TO's in this game. It was ugly at times.
Ok here is the encouraging stuff. The shot looks absolutely legit. When he is looking comfortable you are surprised if he misses. I think he had only one shot I remember that he was set and he missed. He moves without the ball and relocates. A couple times early in the game this actually led to TO's so his Wolves teammates need to know he isn't going to just stand around. I hope that keeps up we need someone like that.
Even though he had some turnovers he still looks to have enough skill that even at a higher level of basketball be will be able to handle the ball at times and move the ball along or attack closeouts etc. Against some 2nd units he might be able to create every once in a while. He isn't just strictly a 3 and D guy, but you don't want this guy going iso on people. Watching some highlights etc he does actually have a post game. He doesn't seem like a selfish player he seems very willing to make a pass etc.
Defensively he si very active and engaged. He is down in a stance sliding his feet and communicating. HE seems pretty good at chasing perimeter players that move without the ball. AS the game went on they started switching more. He looked like he was very clearly communicating what he was going to do if he switched and whatever he did it was very decisive. He doesn't seem like the type of guy that's going to get beat by being unaware or not giving effort. Often during the game you would see him boxing a guy out when the shot went up. He seemed to do ok when he got switched onto a big.
Overall he looks like a guy that can shoot and probably play competent basketball. He will come in playing fewer minutes but mostly the same type of role as he did for his team the last couple years. Hopefully we found a pretty solid player. This game was confirming what I have learned before it.
