Re: 2018 NBA Draft
Fully expecting a dud from thibs and co.
I just dont think he has a plan going into the draft. My guess is that he's going to draft another big. The one thing that he has shown in his 2 drafts is that hes drafted position that we were deep.
Ricky and tyus? Draft another pg in dunn.
Kat and dieng? Draft another center in patton.
While our wing depth has been nonexistent for a while.
So with teague, tyus, and rose at pg and kat, dieng, and patton at c; itll be a pg or c again.

Well, Thibs certainly hasn't done anything in his two drafts to inspire confidence that he can be counted on to get a really good player at #20. As you know, I didn't like hiring Thibs in the first place and I especially didn't like making him our PBO. It made no sense to put him in charge of our front office when he hasn't even worked in an NBA front office, much less been the head of one. From what I'm told, Layden is Thibs' gopher, and doesn't make personnel decisions. He makes calls to other organizations. But that's probably OK when you consider how horrible Layden was the one time he was put in charge of an NBA front office as the Knicks PBO.
Thibs does seem pretty good at getting players he coached in his own prior stint as an NBA head coach. So credit to Thibs for getting Butler and Taj here. But beyond that, especially in the draft, its hard to be optimistic.

Well with the way that wiggs has been relegated in the offense, i expect thibs to trade wiggs to the knicks for noah this off season. Thibs is salivating at the thought of having rose, butler, taj, and noah on the floor in 4th quarters.

I still think Kris Dunn could end up being Marcus Smart 2.0. It's too early with Patton in one sense, but we all know it's hard to teach motor and toughness, two things he lacks.

I know this was all in jest but I'll point out that we have plenty of evidence Thibs would not do a lopsided deal like that.
Thibs 2 draft picks show he may be willing to take who he or the people around him thinks is the best player/best talent available. I don't think that's the worst thing. It's worth noting though that right now this team doesn't have a front court pairing for a year or 2 from now. 2 years ago it was far from a certainty that Rubio or Tyus was the answer at PG. It's always tricky with drafts and assessing GMs because often you don't know the outcome till years later. I think we need to see something legitimately positive on the court from these guys (Thins/Layden) next season either from a draft pick or some other young player like Amile or MGH or some other guy like that or even a young FA that was a failure elsewhere.

I agree the jury's still out on both Dunn and Patton. Both picks could end up being really good ones.

I agree, Monster, that Thibs hasn't made any dumb lopsided deals. While I criticize him as both head coach and PBO, I do acknowledge that, thankfully, he's no Kurt Rambis or David Kahn. And the jury is definitely still out on Dunn and Patton. But he hasn't done anything to give us any confidence that he's among the best or even the better NBA executives.
I also agree that we need to see some success soon from one of the young guys Thibs has already signed or some other young player he might sign or draft this coming summer. But Thibs the head coach doesn't seem interested in giving playing time to an Amile Jefferson, a MGH, or an Anthony Brown. The previous season, Thibs buried Dunn on the bench to the point where Dunn was unhappy and wanted to leave in the end. The lack of playing time for Dunn was particularly odd when you consider that we were well out of the playoff race pretty early in the season and when you further consider that Thibs wasn't fond of Ricky's game as his PG.
In other words, the combination of Thibs as both PBO and head coach doesn't bode well for the acquisition and development of young players. Meanwhile our vets are getting older, have big contracts and will soon be up for even bigger contracts.

Thibs not playing some guys is my biggest criticism of him. One thing I will say about him from your post is:
1. There were times Thibs played Dunn when he wasn't even deserving of his minutes and was outplayed by Tyus Jones. In addition at some point during the season Rubio was playing so well it was hard to take him off the floor. Could Thibs have played Dunn more down the stretch? Sure but it wasn't like he was playing that well. It sounds like you have heard some of what Jon K has reported about Dunn. It sounded like Dunn didn't handle himself that well which is kinda weird based on what we heard about him coming into the league. Really the guy that's weird Thibs played over Dunn in some ways was Rush who it seems clear either the Wolves has zero interest in bring back or Rush had zero interest in coming back. The season was over they could have played Dunn at SG even though the shooting would have been brutal.
2. While Thibs could play Tyus more he has played him when he could have easily have gone with a vet player. Tyus is the reason for some hope of Thibs playing young guys.
Again one way or another a young player beyond what we saw this year needs to emerge and play worthwhile minutes for this team. I'm looking forward to seeing if that happens. I get if you or others are not feeling optimistic about it. I'm hoping Thibs will feel more confident in his system and players in year 3.
