Rudy Gay opts out
Interesting news. If Rudy Gay were fully healthy, he would be someone to target in free agency. Supposedly he is targeting getting back on the court sometime in June. I know achilles tears are a bad injury. Wes Matthews came back from a similar injury, and his shooting suffered. I wouldn't consider signing him unless two conditions were met: (1) Our medical staff does a thorough check up and believes he should be at least 90% during the upcoming season and 100% the following year; and (2) he signs a cap friendly deal with either some contingencies based on number of games played and performance. It would also be nice if we signed him to a short term deal with a team option.
He opted out of a deal that would have paid him a little more than $14 million, so we'd probably have to improve on that figure. I"m sure every team will be a little leary of him with his injury, so what if we gave him a base of $10-12 million plus $3-4 million in games played incentives and $3-4 million in performance based incentives. Since he missed quite a few games this past year, setting a games played number higher than last year, would be regarded as an "unlikely" bonus and may not count against the cap.

As far as I recall scoring has been the only above average skill Rudy has ever had his entire career, isn't he kind of redundant on our team?

Ironically, he beats Wiggins in every statistical category except scoring.

ah yes Wiggins our human swiss army knife he truly does it all lol, seriously though I would have a hard time stomaching 12 million + per year for a scorer who just tore his achilles. It is going to be rough going for him next year coming back from that particular injury

Maybe so. Well, I'd pursue other options first like Millsap, Ibaka and perhaps Gallinari first. If we strike out on all the big name free agents, then if he checks out well, I'd consider him if we get a friendly deal. He's supposedly way ahead of schedule--whatever that means. If he's back on the court in June. We can run him thru plenty of drills as well as having a medical evaluation.
Re: Rudy Gay opts out
Even if Gay takes a pay cut opting out of the Kings seems to make a lot of sense. He has been there and they aren't going anywhere with him so he could look for a team that makes more sense i.e. not radically dysfunctional.
He can say he will be on the floor in June etc but I'd be leary of signing him to much money with that injury. That's a legit injury concern. I wouldn't mind adding him overall if the guy can come back relatively healthy. He can play.

Yes on one condition:
we get rid of him first chance we get. Teams get better when he leaves. Kings should consider themselves grateful

He's only left two teams and Memphis had a 56 win season (2012-13) during the last season Gay was there. After Gay left, Memphis has won 50, 55, 42 and 43. I don't know how you can conclude from this that Gay's departure improved Memphis. Gay was only in Toronto for like a year (actually two half seasons) and the year he came in Toronto won 34 games and his last year with Toronto, they won 48. Toronto won 56 the year after Gay departed, but that could just as easily be attributed to the emergence of Kyle Lowry (whose game really took off) and improvement by DeRozan. Sacramento was bad before Rudy Gay and is no worse after Rudy Gay joined. Maybe, you can make the case that he hasn't carried anybody (and it looks like that so far is the case), but I don't see any convincing evidence that he makes teams worse. In fact, his plus/minus stats have generally been positive. We wouldn't need him to carry us and if he came here cheaply and the health issues are addressed, then I think he could be useful. Gay is not a must get guy, but he's an option to consider if we strike out on all the other big names.

Speaking of Gallo, i haven't commented on him yet but I am a big fan of his game. I just worry about his ability to stay healthy. But given good health, he would be a tremendous player that would compliment us very well. He's got some mental toughness about him that we sorely lack. But he just doesn't play enough games.
