The guys that have kevin martin as our number 1 wing going into wiggins 2nd season.( The same season that happen to be martin's last in the nba as no team pick him up after that season). They are in the 'I told You So' phase now regarding wiggins?
I certainly understand the frustrations some has with wig. All of us have our own favorite type of player and we tend to manipulate our argument towards the types we like. The fact of the matter is, all 30 teams would gladly have wiggins and all 30gm's would offer wiggins the max contract if they could and there is a reason for that.
The problem that fans, and owners alike, fall into come contract time is "what would others pay". The league is littered with so many players that got paid WAY more than their actual basketball value because owners fell into the trap of paying a temporary perceived market value. Guys like Barnes, Parsons, Batum, G. Hill, R. Anderson, Crabbe, Monroe, Turner, Biyambo, and the list goes on and on. No one would sign those guys for anywhere near the value once their new contracts actually begin. Everyone just worries so much about "losing a player for nothing", but as I look at the list above, the team that let those players walk turned out to be the winner in the end. I stand by the "pay huge for stars", and everyone else gets scraps.
Wiggins is simply NOT worth a max deal as a basketball player. Would he have gotten it on the open market....yes. Doesn't mean it was the right decision for the Wolves. Everyone talks about Wiggins scoring strength, but he has always been a very inefficient scorer. Volume scoring and health are his calling cards, but those don't make him anywhere near a max player. Butler shows us game after game why he is a max type guy. He and Wig are just in different worlds as it stands today. That being said, I think Wiggins would still have strength on trade market given lack of wings and his strength as a volume scorer...teams still fall for that skill as much as us fans have.
