That means 3, possibly all 4 years of any deal we could give him would be good years. He's become a great 3pt shooter the past 2 years. He'd be a great veteran to add to this team and his offensive game fits what we need. Then you could guarantee 2 high level scorers would be on the court at all times. I don't think it would happen, but we'd get even better if it did.
I don't think the PG search will be limited to just Lowry. And like you said if you sign him to 3-4 years his time frame actually fits perfect. You still get good years then free his salary to sign someone else to pair with the big 3 while two of the 3 are just entering their prime years.
I think for the most part this board has been stuck in a certain way of thinking, me included, rebuilding and generally over valuing our current players. If Gorgui, Bazz and Rubio were to hit the open market as free agents. They won't be considered by the top 6-8 teams in the league. That's where we are trying to get to. No way a top level team would pay Gorgui at his current rate. Bazz will most likely get paid by a non playoff team. None of them fit get reat in today's game. Imagine the Celtics, Warriors, Spurs, Cavs, Rockets, wanted Bazz, or Rubio in free agency. Wouldn't happen.
Lip I highly regardyour opinion on here but I think you take Tibs comments too literal in most cases. He simply doesn't tip his hand much. The day before Dunn was traded he was praising him to the heavens. While I think it's definitely possible Rubio and/or Gorgui will be on the team, their production, salary and style of don't match with where this teams trajectory is looking to go.
Duke - We just disagree on Gorgui's value. I'm certain lots of team, including top 8 teams, would love to have Gorgui and would pay what we're paying. Not the same with Ricky. I wouldn't see any top 10 team wanting Ricky. But I think he has more value to us surrounded by 3 20+ point scorers.
Further, we simply have too many roster spots to fill with high quality players to trade our current starting PG for someone better who will take an extra $10 million out of our cap space. That's why I think it's unlikely we trade Ricky as a salary dump to sign Lowry or Hill even though I think they'd both be an updated over Ricky.
I'm not sure what it would cost to sign Teague or Holiday. But I'd stay away from
Holiday given his injury history. And I'm not a big fan of Teague. After that I don't see any PGs clearly better than Ricky who wouldn't cost at least $10 million more per year.
I agree that there would be good teams that would have interest in Dieng I am just not sure if they would be willing to pay what we are paying. We will see what the market ends up being. The Dunc'd on podcast guys have been saying they should have given him that deal and I disagreed with them but they are now looking pretty smart. I think a number of guys just aren't going to get the big contracts they did last year and I thought otherwise a few weeks ago. This could be the year to jump in and sign some guys. I think next year the cap could end up having a bit of a jump if the playoffs have more games and teams create more revenue from the jersey patches etc.
Which brings us to the PGs. I think we have assumed for a while 20 million is probably somewhere near the baseline for some of the guys you mentioned. The landscape has changed quite a bit in the last couple weeks.
Cap is lower
Teams have drafted future PGs
-Dallas
-Sacramento
-Knicks (probably will still want a vet though)
-Lakers
-Sixers
Other teams made moves to add PGs to their roster.
-Nets
-Bulls
Teams that may have less excitement about paying for a PG
-Pacers
-Clippers if everything blows up.
So who are the teams that wouldnlooks to sign or resign or upgrade their PG spot?
-Toronto
-Indiana
-Knicks (Frank'n won't be ready right away they would likely need somebody but it could be a more fringe starter type)
-Orlando if they don't believe in Payton
-Spurs (they drafted PG types in the last 2 drafts)
-Clippers
-Utah
-Denver? Who do they view as their PG going forward?
-NO
Is that enough of a market to drive up the price for a guy like for example Teague who turned 29 a few days ago and is a nice enough starter but not a guy you go too crazy about? I'm not a huge fan of Teague but he would be an interesting get if he was only a couple million more than Rubio.
So in addition to the players that are FA from the teams above players that are or most likely will be available are
Collison
Rondo
Rose
Deron Williams
Patty Mills
Plus his lilely viewed as backups/flyers
MCW
Jennings
Rodriguez
Jack
Shelvin Mack
Trey Burke
You also have some guys that are likely gettable like Rubio Payton and possibly a guard from the Celtics if they start wheeling to get George.
So....it's an interesting market and depending on the FA carousel things could change very quickly. There are some other PGs that could be moved in a trade also backupsnand starters.
It's going to be a very interesting summer at this position and there are so many balls in the air right now and if one or 2 teams make significant moves it could have a draftic effect on the rest of the market. It's much less predictable than 2 weeks ago IMO. I think Jrue going back to NO as pretty much a lock but most everything else...idk it will be interesting.
