Sign Another Free Agent for the Next 9 Games and Playoffs?

Post by Lipoli390 »

We still have an open roster spot even after signing Derrick Rose. And no telling when Rose will be back or whether he can stay healthy.

So how about signing Jordan Crawford? He's young, pretty talented, available and itching to get back into the League. How about bringing up Anthony Brown and Amile Jefferson for the final 9 games? I actually think Brown could help us with his 3-point shooting in some situations. And it would be good experience for them to get a taste of an NBA stretch drive with playoff intensity. And I like the idea of rewarding Jefferson for the great season he's had in the G-League.

Id much rather go after a wing defender. Im not worried as much about the 3 ball and spacing with bjelly getting big minutes.

Bjelly has been great, but some of the top 4 seeds in the west have quick guards/forwards that run you through screens and attack you.

Wiggins has improved defensively, so even if he blankets 1, you still have 1 or 2 other perimeter guys to worry about. Teague is a poor defender, so he doesnt help. So, id like the option of bringing in a quicker defender when teams go small instead of having to rely on crawford to spell bjelly or taj.

I still think allen might have enough in the tank to guve us good minutes in bursts or maybe kj mcdanields.

It seems unlikely we are gonna do anything at this point...unless Rose is gonna be out for an extended period. I mean if we were gonna sign somebody why not do it a couple weeks ago and get them familiar with the team? I could see them converting Anthony Brown to a regular contract so he would be available for the playoffs or something I guess. It just feels weird to save this roster spot all year so you have that flexibility and then...not use it. Honestly it feels cheap like we are used to with the Wolves or the "we didn't think anyone was worth it" despite guys being available like vets that end up helping other teams and young players that end up developing into something worthwhile. I don't have a problem with having the open roster spot much of the year. That makes sense to have that flexibility. It just bugs me that the team can't find someone to bring on. Maybe they will get someone like Tony Allen that can help. It seems unlikely we will get much information either way about the decision. The player they bring is unlikely to help this year but maybe another young guy they think could help beyond. Oh well.

I agree, Monster. It made sense to carry the open roster spot most of the season to provide flexibility. But that spot should have been filled at some point in the last 30-45 days. We don't know whether the Wolves pursued Belinelli or Illyasova or whether those two had no interest in signing here. Seems to me that Tony Allen would be worth signing, but maybe there's nothing left in his tank. Converting Brown to a regular contract might make sense for the stretch drive and the playoffs. He has an NBA-caliber perimeter shot and a nice overall skill-set. I'm not sure who we could sign right now, but I don't like the idea of continuing to carry an open roster spot through these final 9 games and into the playoffs, especially with Butler out and Rose limping around in a boot. Right now Crawford is our only wing off the bench other than MGH. That's disturbing.

I hadn't seen Rose is in a walking boot where did you see that?

Oddly I think Thibs has seemed to be willing to give younger players a chance before signing older vets. Well when I mean a chance I mean somescraps of minutes here and there but anyway. The Iowa Wolves are not gonna be in the playoffs so Brown, Patton and Jefferson will be available to hang out and maybe play (lol) after they play their last game today. It makes sense to throw Brown in for some minutes because IN THEORY he has the skill set to make and take 3's at this level and he has Size. I'd like to at least see some of those guys get some garbage time minutes or something.
