Wolves Defensive breakdowns

Post by Q12543 [enjin:6621299] »

Nate Duncan has an interesting set of tweets and clips from last night's game that I think goes a long ways in highlighting some of the defensive issues with Wiggins and KAT. He calls out a couple of other players too, but his ire is especially trained on Wig:

All of those clips were Wiggins being the last line of defense after players got burned. He should not be covering 5 guys out there. Clearly this guy has a pre-disposition to grind on Wiggins like many here to want him to be next level. I think that is fair for him and Towns. But at least Wiggins is in position. Does he get that's extra push? Not yet. That being said there could have been 50 clips last night of Zach and Ricky letting the guards blow by them. Highlighting those clips as our team defensive breakdowns is a bit disingenous when the breakdowns start way before they get to Wiggins at the rim.

So many of te defensive issues it looks like are highlighted in the link you posted is a a lot about playing as a real team and trusting each other. I think there was a play where Belly played too off of Chandler and he had too easy of an open look at a 3. Why didn't he walk up that half step? Poor technique? Poor awareness? Probably it's a few things. I think some of it could be guys not trusting that if they get beat nobody will have their backs.

Wiggins does look bad at times. That one where he lost Harris to begin with and then just watched...was the most troublesome clip for me. The ones where he didn't jump for blocks...maybe he legitimately thought he couldnt actually make any difference. One year in basketball intramural a we had what was pretty close to a staff team since most of the guys were older. We weren't the most athletic guys but we played smart our captain had a plan and expected us to stick to it. One of his team concepts was not fouling on fast breaks if you were probably beat just a solid contest. That's always stick with me it sure doesn't help to give a player an and 1 when you are already giving up an easy point. I've probably already written more than I wanted to about Wiggins in this area he should be much better than what he is both defending and in general playing his butt off. He should be mentored by Bazz when it comes to effort.

Nate who? My next door neighbor has a take on the game last night too. Doesn't mean we should care.

Even the biggest Wiggins apologist should be disheartened by those clips, embarrassing. . I'm a big believer in his talent but he absolutely needs to be better. Those plays absolutely lose games. I get liking a player and sticking up for him but you find out who's objective and who's blind or stubborn from the comments on those highlights or low lights I should say.

BTW, Nate Duncan is very good. I listening to his podcast quite often.

I'm not going to watch the clips. I get it, the Wolves are bad on defense. Finding new ways to illustrate it doesn't interest me. And there is enough Wiggins hate on the board already. If you think he's that terrible why bother?

Doper - It takes a team effort to be as bad as we are on defense. That being said, these highlights show Wiggins at his worst. We've seen him dialed in when defending on the ball in isolation. But it's this stuff that drives me crazy about him. He never takes charges, rarely blocks shots, is a poor defensive rebounder. He needs to get waaaaay better as a team defender, and yes, that means sometimes covering for his team mates' butts.

Cool - LOL, when you don't like what you see, then disparage the messenger (in this case Nate Duncan). Classic. By the way, even your next door neighbor could see the problem in these clips. It doesn't take an expert to see lack of effort.

I have never once been accused of being an expert and I did in fact see the lack of effort! Does this mean there is still hope for me?

Like I said Q, I get it. Your daily efforts to convince us we suck at D along with my own eyes tell the story. And if you can drag Andrew through the mud while doing so means extra points for you. Nice job.

Sometimes covering, more like always covering. The whole system is breaking down because everyone is getting beat to easily from the get go. I think my point still stands. Andrew's mistakes are not what make our team defense poor. I worst they account for 1/5 of our team mistakes. But since he is the best of our steaming pile of poo it is likely more like 1/8 or 1/10.
