Keeping KG on the roster as a playoff weapon

Post by TeamRicky [enjin:6648771] »

What if we keep KG on with our 15th roster spot and allow him to coach/mentor during the regular season and play as many minutes as he can during the playoffs. Since there are no back to back games in the playoffs and he is rested up during the regular season, perhaps he can go up to 25 minutes for as long as we are in the playoffs. Given his limited games, this could extend his career a little and allow him to sign with us for near minimum salary and be a playoff weapon for as long as he can still produce quality minutes.

I note that one year ago he had three games where he played over 30 minutes and one over 35 minutes, so maybe if he conserves himself he could play in the 25-30 minute range.

I don't think in your 40's you can just flip a switch after not playing all year and be anywhere near effective enough to be an asset in the playoffs. Not only that, introducing him into the rotation would cause a ripple affect throughout the team that couldn't be anything but disruptive.

I think this is going to happen, regardless. Whether he is healthy and a part of the rotation come playoff time, will be up to KG and Thibs.

If Kevin Garnett decided he wants to play in 2016-17, it will be for the $8M he's likely to opt in for. He's not taking the minimum. That's a pipe dream in itself let alone sitting the regular season and then just coming in the playoffs and being a net positive. That also, like Cool said, could disrupt the locker room if a guy like Bjelica has been earning his minutes and then gets pushed to the side for a 40-year old who didn't do anything to get them to the playoffs. That's just a bad scenario.

He is under contract so it is completely in KG's court what will happen. Whatever he can give us is gravy if he decides to play. But transition at the 4 should be the plan for this year. I would love it if belly was the answer, but I haven't seen enough from him to make me think that is the case. We need another 4 on the roster in any scenario.

Cool, I think KG could play whatever regular season minutes he needs to get himself ready to play in the playoffs. KG is under contract for another year, so we can try it out next year (assuming we make the playoffs) and if it works out well, then maybe we can extend him another year for close to minimum with the same idea. I don't think it would be very disruptive given that KG likely won't be taking on huge minutes and after all I think most on the team would welcome him back into the rotation. I'm not sure its any more disruptive than getting an injured player back and refitting him into the rotation.

Of course he'll get his 8M next year, I never said otherwise. I said if he can give us quality playoff minutes beyond that and will play for near minimum, then its an idea to consider. If Bjelica is playing well, he'll get minutes. It gives the team another option. Options aren't a bad thing.

I'm still hoping he retires, even though I know he won't and will collect the rest of those checks. We don't need him. We need someone who can play 70+ games at more than 15 MPG. Do us all a favor, KG. Hang 'em up.

If KG wants to do what's best for the team, he'll hang 'em up. I hate having roster spots tied up in guys who we know will have limited availability each year. I honestly thought he'd be a rotation guy this past season. That proved to be a pipe dream. His games played have dropped each of the last three seasons. I can't see that trend reversing at this point. 38 games isn't much help to a team.
