Let's make a deal: Shabazz edition
Let's make a deal: Shabazz edition
This won't happen but let's say Shabazz tells his agent he wants to stay with the Wokves long term even if that means he is coming off the bench as a scorer. He wants to do an extension. What kind of deal would you be willing to give him based on him basically leaving some money on the table since he may be able to be a starter elsewhere on the open market?
It's a little bit tough for me to say because the cap is going up and I would think that would make it a bit tricky for other posters as well but I think it's an interesting way to look at his value.

I'm looking to trade him this off-season (obviously for appropriate value; what value that is differs for some like myself) so I wouldn't get to that point, nor have I really thought about it too hard. Whatever the number would be, I can almost guarantee it'll be too high and you'll be paying for what you think you'll get in the future instead of what he's already shown, which isn't a whole lot. It's a big risk to re-sign him. I'll leave it at that.

This is purely hypothetical so roll with it what number would you be comfortable giving him for a scorer off the bench that plays hard? Fine I'll throw out a number 3 years 21 million. I'd probably go higher and he would want more but like I said what number would make you say "yeah for that price sure we would love to have you."

Of the young core Bazz is the one I'm least interested in, or concerned about retaining. This fact makes your hypothetical difficult as my number would be very low and most certainly unrealistic to Bazz and his agent. In fact it'd likely piss him off, and I say that as a guy who loves Bazz's energetic style of play when looked at outside of a team game, I like Bazz but believe he has should be traded as keeping all these kids is a non starter.
Sorry I can't do better than that, I struggle to just dress myself.

I'd listen to offers on Bazz but we probably won't get much in return. I'm content just letting him play out his cheap rookie contract through next year.

I'm in this camp. Let him play while listening to offers. If the right offer comes in, then great - make the deal. Otherwise, let him play out his cheap rookie deal, then let the market decide his worth. If it's too much - let him walk. Isn't almost better to let guys walk vs. take back some garbage back and possibly be on the hook for some other crap contract? IDK...

I tender him and let him get what the market will give him and go from there. I have no interest locking him up before then. He didn't show enough improvement this year to earn an extension before the deadline.

I've seen you make that point before. What garbage do you think we'd be taking back that the Wolves would sign off on? I know I'd be looking to move him for a future 1st. If you do get a player in return, chances are they're another young player on a similar deal. Or if you do trade him for a vet, they're not going to be expensive because of the contract Bazz has that the other team would have to match. I just don't see how you think the Wolves could possibly take back a bad deal in the trade. That makes no sense from a logical standpoint.

To me....Bazz is worth 4YR/$20MM. He will go for more, but that is what his value is to me personally. If he could make himself a 38+% 3pt shooter, then that number jumps a bunch. But for now....it's $5MM per.
But the more interesting proposal may be the "bad" contract. I agree with Cam that mid-season, the low salary may prohibit this type of deal. But I would wonder if there wouldn't perhaps be a guy available that makes too much money, but would be more valuable to our team. Think maybe a guy like Koufas, Ed Davis, O'Quinn as just a couple examples. Not saying those guys are perfect, but they may fit a need more than Bazz. Just a thought...no need for criticism, as it is just an idea.

The money has to match, but the years do not. Bazz comes off the books next year and we can use that extra cap space to sign any Free Agent we want. If we trade Bazz and get back a stiff on a longer deal - we are on the hook for a longer time frame. I just don't think it's a big deal to let guys walk at the end of their deals. It would seem to allow for more flexibility going forward.
