I am still in favor of drafting Sabonnis. So trading down? If they get #3, maybe #5 and a future 1st, or #3/Payne for #5/anyoneelse?
Now that it's official and MIN has HOU's 2nd, are you guys in favor of a point, wing, or post? I like maybe Tyrone Wallace. If they go post, I have no idea, maybe the 7-footer from China. Thoughts?

Anyone on a rookie contract is going to look to cash in big on their first veteran deal. We currently have four guys on rookie deals that need shots - and lots of them: Bazz, Wiggins, LaVine, and Towns.
Luckily we have a PG that would prefer dealing out assists versus shooting - almost to a fault. But still, there is only so much room for another scorer and none of our current scorers are at a stage in their career where they will be willing to sacrifice their next contract in order to chase a ring. That's what vets do, not super talented rookies.
In my opinion, if we draft Hield or Ingram - two guys that absolutely need to score to maximize their effectiveness - something has to give at some point.
I have a sneaky suspicion there won't be another highly-ranked rookie added to the team next season for this very reason.
Speaking of favors, they are about to deal with too many mouths to feed (pay) which looks like it will cost them a guy like Hayward.
The Wolves are in better shape though because they have THE guy to build around where Utah was piecing it together with 2nd tier guys.

I admit it is confusing, but if the pick is top 45 protected, we don't get it. The best Houston can do is finish in the bottom of the playoffs, which means they get picks #15 and #45.

Since I think this team has two glaring needs before it can be a "top four in the West" team, I think we need to use our draft choices. We need a strong rim protector and we need a stronger second team.
As I look at the roster, I think we have three ready to retire (KG, Pek and Prince), three useful only at the end of the bench on the third team (Smith, Payne and Rudez), and eight useful going forward (the rest). The eight are all under contract for 2-4 years and we'll lose at least a couple to injury.
To really move ahead, we need someone to force Dieng to the second team and we need a strong 3 and D player who either leads the second team or forces Lavine to be a 6th man. One of the two comes from the draft, the other is a solid free-agent signing.

Yeah, I think that's correct. It's confusing because nbadraft.net right now has the Wolves getting the 45th pick, but I think they are incorrect. The way I read it is that Houston gets to keep the pick if it is #45.

I'm on record as drafting Buddy, but as much as I like him, I'd be ok with trading the third pick with Bazz for a solid vet to anchor that second team or push to be a starter

Agree that a 3 & D wing and big man make a lot of sense from a team need perspective. However, it's really hard to identify a 3 & D guy from the draft, especially a top 5 or 6 pick, since any wing worth his salt in that range is going to see himself as a future go-to guy and seemingly every one of the options available (Brown, Ingram, Hield, Murray) is missing either the "3" or "D" part right now.
The only big man in that range I'm interested in is Poeltl since it appears that Skal and Bender would be major projects. But even Poeltl doesn't excite me too much.
The guys that get me excited from a fit perspective are guys like Sabonis and Luwawu, both of whom are in a tier below our draft slot.

Luwawu's not necessarily a sure thing in the shooting department either.

Potential 3 and D wings: 1) Jaylen Brown 2) Luwawu 3) Baldwin 4) McCaw 5) Prince
If we trade down we should be able to draft both a big (Sabonis, Poeltl, Davis or Skal) and a 3 and D wing: Luwawu, Baldwin, McCaw or Prince. This is an option if Ingram, Simmons, Hield and Bender are all off the board when we pick.

We definitely don't need nor want two more rookies on the roster next year.
