Trade Tyus?

Post by longstrangetrip [enjin:6600564] »

Doogie reports that Lucas3 is a lock to make the team, leaving us with 4 PGs. He hypothesizes that one PG might be traded, and that Philly, Sac and NO have expressed interest in Tyus Jones, but no offers yet. Should we trade Tyus, and if so, for whom (or what)?

I really hate the thought of trading Tyus after what he showed us this summer and the fact that he is a Minnesota kid who loves playing here and is by all accounts a great teammate. I really wish he had more of an opportunity to play this preseason as I mentioned in another thread.

If we had to trade him, I'd like to get Noel or trade Tyus and Bazz for Noel and a wing player like Covington, Luwawu or Grant. I don't know if this is even realistic, but I certainly am not a fan of giving Tyus and his rookie contract and potential away just to trade him.

I don't think getting Noel would be possible using Tyus. I don't think we trade any of our PGs, like we are in no need to trade either of them, until there is an injury to a wing position we are not in a bad spot for depth, then we can make a trade if need be.

The answer, as always, is "it depends". Are we going to get the three 2nd rounders back that Flip traded to get him? Most likely not!

I'm not quite sure what the infatuation with John Lucas is (assuming Thibs is infatuated with him, as Doogie seems to speculate). I thought he was brought in to help smooth the way for Thibs during camp, but that was about it. He's an over-the-hill fringe NBA PG. My guess is that Doogie is off on this one.

In terms of TeamRicky's concern with Tyus not getting much burn in pre-season, I kind of wonder if Thibs has seen enough of Tyus to already feel comfortable with him as our 3rd PG. He saw him a ton in the Vegas League and I'm sure he watched film of him from last season as well. He knows that he's a smart, poised player that can come off the bench and at least be competent in running a team. Dunn on the other hand needs a lot of reps at PG and obviously has much greater upside.

I don't think Noel's trade value is super high. I think he was shopped hard during the draft and nobody was going to give up one of the top picks for him. Everybody knows the Sixers are desperate to trade Noel or Okafor and they risk losing Noel for nothing if somebody makes an offer for him in free agency that they decide isn't worth matching. At the same time, the Sixers are pretty desperate for a point guard. There aren't many point guards with the potential of Tyus readily available in a trade. Maybe Phoenix would be willing to trade Brandon Knight but they probably wouldn't do so unless Philly made a ridiculously good offer.

What has Layden and Thibs done in their time with the wolves that suggests they are going to trade a 20 year old player away because they are keeping some journeyman that's a few days from turning 34? I'm not seeing it.

Is Lucas really a lock? The guy has played 2 preseason games.

Does it seem so ridiculous to have a vet guard that can handle the ball even if he is the size of a PG? Not really. The Wolves guards outside of Rubio Lavine, Tyus and Dunn have 3 years of NBA experience combined between them. Heck they have like 5.5 college years of experience between them and Lavine was a bench player for his one year.

Now would they trade Tyus if they got a good return? Sure but what kind of return is good enough for Tyus? If I don't get at least a first rounder or a slew of 2nds then it's not going to happen. I'm not sure any team is going to give up a lot to get Tyus I am sure teams have inquired based on the Wolves having 2 PGs ahead of him and he is cheap and the price likely is t going to be ridiculous and some teams need PGs and A few teams were reported around the draft likong Tyus.

To be flat out honest Tyus seems like a Thibs and Layden guy. Smart competitive (Thibs coaching pal coach K probably signs his praises) young cheap and locked in for a couple more seasons what else do you want?

I voted to keep him, but like any trade thread, I would not be opposed to a trade if we got comparable or better value in return. That's the problem though...Tyus wasn't highly regarded out of Duke, and had a ho hum rookie year...and d league and summer don't mean much to GMs. So I can't see us getting much back for him. The teams interested in him are lottery-type teams, so a first rounder is out of the question, and I don't think any of those teams would give us much of a player for Tyus.

Here's the other reason I'm voting to keep him. If Rubio ever had to miss a block of games, I would be more comfortable with Tyus starting at the point than Lucas3 or Dunn.

Doogie has been a pretty good source of information recently, but hopefully he is wrong about this one.

Tyus has played in 3 games and played very well. Lucas has played somewhat well in 2 games. I'm not exactly sure what the infatuation people have with Lucas except he seems like he feels confident about being on the roster and being a vet etc. that's fine. That doesn't mean he is gonna be the 3rd PG or whatever.

I feel if we deal him it will be for peanuts therefore I say we need to keep him. I like the idea of a Jones for Noel deal but I don't think they would go for it. At this point I keep him unless we get a great deal for him. Kids so young and so intelligent that you just know he will figure out how to play at this level. I fear the deal we would get would be a heavily protected first and a second for him. I don't like that.

Keep him. I got a feeling we're gonna need him as our backup PG this year, for either injury or bad play by others. Keeping Lucas sounds dumb
