Re: Redrafting 2009
Opps I made a mistake.
1. Stephen Curry | Golden State Warriors: (real pick: 7)
But just for reference:
7. Ricky Rubio | Minnesota Timberwolves: (5)
David Kahn drafted Rubio fifth overall, but the Wolves didn't actually get any value from the Spanish floor leader until 2011 when he finally came to the U.S. Rubio has been productive when he's been on the floor, but he's played just 202 NBA games, 22 fewer than Hasheem Thabeet. Rubio's career averages are 10.2 points and 8.2 assists.
26. Johnny Flynn | Minnesota Timberwolves: (6)
He was drafted sixth overall by ex-Minnesota general manager David Kahn and his career got off to a nice start, averaging 13.5 points and 4.4 assists while starting all 81 games as a rookie. However, he had hip surgery in 2010 and was traded to Houston during the 2011 NBA draft. He played just 11 games in Houston before being dealt to Portland. He logged 18 games with the Trail Blazers in 2011-12 and has been overseas ever since.
28. Hasheem Thabeet | Memphis Grizzlies: (2)
One of the biggest draft busts in recent memory, the 7-foot-3 former UConn star played a year and a half for the Grizzlies, who drafted him second overall before trading him to Houston in 2011. He was dealt three more times, and spent this past season in the D-League with Grand Rapids. His career numbers are 224 NBA games and averages of 2.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game.

Thabeet.
I remember watching him play a big game at UConn and thinking "oh oh."
The big man spent more time on the ground in that game than on his feet. He seemed overmatched physically (toughness/mentally) even at that level.

Thabeet is a reminder that a franchise can royally screw up the draft and still be successful. Other than Conley, who amongst their core players was one of their draft picks? Gasol, Randolph, Allen, and Lee all came via trade or free agency. And they aren't even close to being a "major market" team!

Did he? From what I recall he dominated most of his matchups on the defensive end.. The only ones I recall him getting worked in were the games against DeJuan Blair? Which was clearly because Blair's strength was a problem for Thabeet.

I think there was a tourney game I watched where his strength was a concern as well but that seems like so long ago and it really wasn't.

And don't forget in 2008, Memphis traded us Love and Mike Miller (and Brian Cardinal who was pretty decent for us!) for Mayo AND they took on Jaric and his terrible contract!
If that trade had been reversed, most of the guys on the board would still be ragging on McHale and saying that's why we've been a bad team for the last 7 years!
And what has Memphis done since? Win. What have we done? Lose, point fingers, and bitch about it. Ok, maybe that's a little harsh, but it feels like it sometimes on this board. :)

Key for Memphis was Gasol trade. They traded Pau for his brother, two first round picks and Kwame Brown. At that time everyone was saying that Lakers robbed Memphis in that trade but afterwards it won't look that bad even though they didn't got much with those picks (both traded and return was not that good). I think they used the cap space after Kwame's contract ended to acquire Randolph. (traded Richardson for him but their salaries didn't match. So trade wouldn't have been possible without cap space.)

Re: Redrafting 2009
Does anyone remember the circumstances of why we traded Ty Lawson? I don't remember if that was a prearranged trade (we picked him for another team). If only we had kept him and traded Flynn to Denver instead...
