Gorgui Dieng

Post by kekgeek »

I got a question what is the future of Gorgui Dieng on this team, I am assuming the wolves take Towns. So Towns will more than likely be the wolves starting Center starting day 1, if healthy I am assuming Pek will be the backup center. So that leaves Gorgui as the third string center. KG more than likely will be back and be the starting PF, Towns will get a few minutes at PF also, the wolves also have Bennett and Payne who are young and could take some PF minutes this season and possibly Bejelica and even though I like Dieng he is not a natural PF even though he played well with Pek together. So my question is are the wolves going to trade Dieng because I think he would have some value around the league, or am I underselling where I think Dieng is going to fit into the rotation

Damn. Wolves have too much depth in the frontcourt. They're gonna be so good next year.

[Note: Don't know how it's gonna shake out. But I have to think that with Garnett and Pekovic ahead of him... there will be plenty of minutes for him eventually.]

I actually like Dieng more and more, especially if we take Towns. I believe the two will be able to work really well and have a solid defensive and offensive in and out combination. That's a ton of length, and Diengs all around IQ next to Towns should allow Flip a chance to really adjust to any other teams roster lineup. Pek to me is the odd man out. If Dieng can continue to add weight but stay Mobile and Healthy...then I feel a low post combo of both Dieng and Towns will be as talented in the league as any.

Come on you know I am not saying that, I am just wondering where Dieng fits in, I think the wolves have a lot of below average players front court players, with Towns hopefully being above average, I think when Pek is healthy he is above average and KG and Dieng are average the rest are below average.

I doubt Bejlica plays here. I would package him with Dieng and go after Portis.

PF: KG, Portis, Bennett
C: Towns, Pek, Payne

I don't see how that makes us any better only if Portis becomes a beast, I think people overrate a lot of prospects during the draft time because they are the unknown

I like Slim's vision of Dieng and Towns together sometime down the road... Our version of Duncan and Robinson?!?

Who knows if Payne and/or Bennett will develop into anything. Who knows how many minutes we will ever get from KG and/or Pek. Keep Dieng. Keep Towns. And bring over Bjelica, too!

Somebody has to go. You're not going to training camp next year with Towns, Payne, Bennett, KG, Bjelica, Dieng, and Pek. Maybe even two of these guys get moved. I think Bjelica is the first guy in line to be moved, and I like to think you can get into the lottery with #31 attached to him. #31 is a very valuable chip. Probably more valuable than even pick #25. Flip has some real opportunity to do something special with the assets he has to work with. Should be very interesting.

Dieng will be the third C and will get his minutes when Pek gets dinged up. I think they'll probably keep him as Center depth given Pek's injury history. It sucks that he probably won't get a lot of playing time if we stay healthy, but Pek is better than him and Towns will likely be better as well. The future rotation doesn't need to be set this year. He's still on his rookie deal so you keep him for the next two years and he may fetch something better via a trade otherwise he is quality depth for cheap. Then you see what he can fetch in restricted free agency to determine whether to keep him beyond that.

Only Flip "the Wizard" knows the plan at this point. All the rest of us can do is guess. As Abe pointed out, depth is not a bad thing considering what happened last year where we saw Robbie Hummel play some Center and Corey Brewer play some PG. I assume that was rock bottom.

As far as Towns/Dieng....my assumption all along was that Towns would start off as our starting PF while getting some token minutes at Center. My thought was that way we could use him at a position of need until he gets bigger/Slower (and most of us do), then slide him over to Center full time. But that was just my guess.
