Grade The Trade #1: Burke for Dieng/Muhammad

Post by Carlos Danger »

Thought I'd go through Flip's trades since becoming GM (similar posts to follow as I get around to it). Flip was named GM in May of 2013. I believe his first official trade after returning was the draft day deal of trading down. Per BB Reference, It essentially became:

Traded Trey Burke to the Utah Jazz for Gorgui Dieng and Shabazz Muhammad.

Not sure who said meh, but it was obviously a great trade. Shabazz and Dieng > Burke by a very long shot.

I assume if we hadn't done the trade, we keep the sold pick. Now if we still got Dieng with that pick, then it really comes down to who becomes better between Shabazz and Burke. The jury is out on that. Now on the other hand, if Dieng was gone because Utah liked Dieng over Gobert and we ended up taking Gobert (unlikely but possible), then it was a horrible trade. I was a huge Dieng fan coming into this year, but he was a bit disappointing this year. I never was a fan of Shabazz, but now I don't think he's a bust, but neither do I think he's a difference maker either.

That's a lot of ifs. How do you feel about the trade when just looking at Burke vs Dieng and Shabazz?

Good trade, but do we know if Flip would have taken Burke straight up if the trade wasn't available? Perhaps he would have rolled the dice with someone like Adams or the Greek Freak.

I voted meh. It looked like a good trade last year. The value of the trade goes down a bit considering the great play from Giannis and Rudy, as well as the meh play from Gorgui. Shabazz could boost the trade in my eyes if he comes into his third season as a legitimate force off the bench like he was mid-season. Need him to continue to work on his 3P shot as well as his defense.

It's just unfortunate that Flip was likely going for "produce now" guys instead of potential All-Stars like Giannis and Rudy, who we could have had at 9 and 26... which is where we were slotted to pick without making any trades.

Hindsight bias aside in terms of drafting those two guys, the best trade would have been throwing 9, 26 and D-Will at Orlando for the chance to draft Oladipo at No. 2. I was a big fan of VO, and still am. He's going to be an All-Star.

I don't like Burke so this is a win from me. I don't think Burke will ever have the impact that the combination of Dieng and baz combined will, right now it's questionable that he'll be better than a healthy Baz on his own.

To be reasonable. Orlando would never bite on that trade. i remember a lot of us hoping that that would have gone down but reality is DW was near bust territory and has low value and 9 and 26 dont look good on a draft class that was considered weak to begin with.

Since he didn't take Giannis with 14th pick, I doubt that he would have used 9th pick for that.
