Grade The Trade #7: Brewer/Daniels

Post by Carlos Danger »

December 19, 2014

As part of a 3-team trade, the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Ronny Turiaf to the Philadelphia 76ers; the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Corey Brewer to the Houston Rockets; the Houston Rockets traded Troy Daniels, cash, a 2015 2nd round draft pick and a 2016 2nd round draft pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves; the Houston Rockets traded Sergei Lishouk and a 2015 2nd round draft pick to the Philadelphia 76ers; and the Philadelphia 76ers traded Alexey Shved to the Houston Rockets. (Minnesota's 2nd-round pick in 2015 and 2016 are protected for picks 50-60 and 31-45, respectively.)

Got out of Brewer's salary for next season + landed a couple of 2nd rounders.

Brewer was an asset to this team under very specific circumstances last season. Playing with Love, Martin, and Pek in the starting lineup meant we weren't relying on him to create offense in the half court and Love's brilliant outlet passes were perfect for Brewer's full court speed and hustle.

Those circumstances disappeared once Love left town and everyone else got hurt. Great guy and a real competitor. But not good in a role without guardrails.

Voted Meh. Certainly gave up the best player in the deal, but Corey is such a good guy that I was happy for him to go to a contending team!

Aren't those picks from Houston around pick #55 or so... considering Houston is a 55-win team?

What are the odds of a pick that late panning out? Brewer offered SOMETHING. At the time, I think some were hoping Troy Daniels would force the three point issue with the Wolves.

No.

[note: i think the trade had the most value from the sense that other veterans in the league saw the favor that flip did for brewer. but think about that for a moment... instead of being known as a place for vets to try to land to win a ring... mn is the place where vets can go to be released when necessary to go elsewhere to win a ring. ummm... not exactly what most fans should be happy about.]

I just realized I hadn't voted on this one until now. It looks like a split. I was torn on this one between "meh" and "bad", but went with "bad" simply because Troy Daniels didn't work out and Brewer was a nice energy guy that I think most teams like to have on the bench. I think Brewer would have been good for the young guys to be around and they didn't even get someone back that could stick on one of the worst teams in the NBA.

Bad trade for sure. 2nd round picks are as "meh" as it gets. We haven't been able to find impact guys in the top 5.

Gave away a good veteran player for nothing. Flip lost this trade too. Have fun, Houston. Fleeced us.

Edit: *Fleeced us AGAIN. Thanks for Chase, though. Ugh.
