Grade The Trade - Analysis

Post by Carlos Danger »

I'll give people more time to vote and then we can tally and discuss Flip's overall trade performance here. But based on the early voting - it looks like he's done ok in the trade department. I'm surprised to see some some of those trades split with "good" and "bad", so if you see split voting - it would be interesting for me for people to write why they voted how they did in those specific trade threads.

My overall take - Flips's done pretty good (better than I thought when I started putting it together). His worst trades seem to be his most recent....but in fairness, those recent trades might look different given more time (if guys like Payne and KG become productive).

I would say Flip the GM has done better than Flip the Coach so far. I don't think he's a great GM, but he hasn't been horrible either. To be great, he needs to absolutely nail more picks, trades, and FA signings. Burke for Shabazz-Dieng was a good trade. But unless one of those guys turns into a core piece of a playoff team (which is still possible), it's not going to be a big difference maker.

I'm looking forward to the summary, carlos. Q concludes that Flip is not a great GM, and if that is true, a quick look at our voting tells me we are not very good as a group at evaluating a GM's performance.

Or (gasp), Q is wrong in his assessment.

LST, you really lobbed a soft ball in here to be jumped all over. But i'm going to take the high road this time and let it go.

No, the high road is no fun...take the low road!

I don't think anything I said was untrue. When Carlos tabulates the results, they are going to be quite a bit more favorable toward Flip the PBO than I would have thought. While one might argue that homerism is impacting some of the votes, I would ask this...why does the board seem to be equally united in concluding Flip has not been a very good coach this year and needs to be replaced? No homerism there. That leads me to conclude that this board is both educated and balanced in its assessment of Flip. Out-of-step and not very good coach, but a very successful PBO.

I think it often "what have you done for me lately" that drives peoples opinions. I didn't have any secret agenda when I started this. I was mostly bored and looking forward to the draft (like many of you). I know they always seem to do some deals during the draft, so I wanted to see peoples opinions of how those deals turned out. Then I just took a look and noticed there have only been 10 total trades, so why not rate them all and do an overall evaluation of Flip's ability in that specific area. Obviously the GM position entails much more than just what I'm covering here (think extending contracts like Pek, getting free agents, drafting etc.). This is just for trades. If somone wants to do another thread for other stuff - go for it.

It's hard for me to understand how anyone can conclude that Flip is a great PBO given our lack of success as a franchise under his watch. It would also be hard for me to understand how anyone could conclude that he's been a terrible GM. My only point is that on a relative basis, he's a better PBO than Coach.

I guess I would like to see someone put together a comprehensive case as to why Flip has been a great PBO. I'll just simply point to the record, the ultimate arbiter of such matters.

Appreciate the work you put into it, as it's helpful to breakdown his moves piece by piece. If you have the time, a similar series on his FA moves and drafts would be very cool.

But who hired the coach?

I was referring to specifically what was in bold. Q's been wrong quite a bit lately.
