I know that sentence in itself is depressing that something like THAT is exciting, but securing the best possible spot in this upcoming draft will have a huge impact on the next decade of Wolves basketball.
I highly doubt whether we draft 2nd, 4th, or 6th will have a huge impact on the next decade of Wolves basketball. It's a shame it has come down to this type of desperation.
What's far more important to our success over the next decade is 1) Good health, 2) good coaching, and 3) the improvement of the current young guys we have.
So while we all hope we get an impact player out of this draft, it's simply one of many, many things that need to go right for this franchise.
Those who think we will drop to 4th in the lottery are mistaken. How do I know that? Because there is what I would consider to be one potential franchise player in this draft - Towns - and the Wolves always end up one pick short. We were one pick short of Alonzo Mourning in the early 90's and more recently we were one pick short of Kyrie Irving. So we will end up with the second pick.

Better than the 5th pick.
I'll take the security.
You can have your meaningless wins.
Think New York is any better for them?
Back to back wins!
And their management is likely upset about it.
BECAUSE OF THE BIG PICTURE.
If we get jumped in the draft, what did we accomplish? The answer is nothing and we still go down as the worst team in the league for no reason. If we don't win the lottery at this point, it is a real disaster of a season because winning the lottery is the only thing that can make up for going down in history as the worst team in 2014-15. There is no difference between 4 and 5 in this draft. There's nothing about Mudiay and Russell that make them significantly better options than Winslow.

Very pessimistic view, and yet I can't help feeling the same way. It's uncanny how unlucky the Wolves have been in their draft position. You're right. Other than the Garnett and Rubio years, it seemed like we were always one pick after the difference makers. I'm trying to stay on the Cool Train and believe that we will end up #1 this year...I agree that Towns could be a franchise type player. I'm also trying to stay optimistic too, though, if we end up 2-4. Okafor and Russell are not at Towns' level in my opinion, but they could still really help this team.

I'd hold off on putting in the Rubio draft.
That one is going down as one of the most inept drafts in sordid Wolves history. The Wolves could have been one of those difference makers...
Two chances to nab Curry... and the Wolves missed both times.

Next year at this time, nobody will remember this miserable finish. But everyone will remember what we did in the draft. If we end up with #1 overall for the 1st time, that would create a ton of excitement for this Franchise for the next couple years. Far more than if we finished second to last in the NBA this year. If that doesn't happen - so be it, we'll still get a good pick. But let's face it, that's all we really have to root for at this point. And the higher the pick, the greater the excitement.

True, Abe. But I wasn't talking about how well they drafted. I was talking about how unlucky they have generally been in draft position. Typically, the consensus pick when it came to their turn was a Derrick Williams or a Wes Johnson (yes, you can use hindsight to say there were better choices available, but you can't argue that most mocks had those guys next). To have both Rubio and Curry available was quite unusual for this snakebit franchise. The fact that Kahn whiffed on Curry is a separate issue.

Gotcha. For me, I see one draft setting the ineptitude of the franchise in motion...
1992. One of the 3 times the Wolves have finished with the league's worst record.
Shaq. Mourning... with Laettner being a distant 3rd. That one still stings.

Oh god don't remind me. I hated Laettner, and yet didn't see any other option at 3. Even with hindsight, I still see him as the only choice at 3...no great players in the entire first round other than the first two picks. I guess I define 1992 as horrible luck rather than ineptitude. We had to suffer through a year like this only to lose the lottery and see two all-time greats picked before us...leaving us with Laettner. The history of the Wolves in a nutshell right there.
