New Wolves assistant coach

Post by Monster »

@KBergCBS: Former Pelicans assistant Bryan Gates, let go when Monty Williams was fired, has landed on Flip Saunders' bench as a Timberwolves assistant.

Sounds like he has had a lot of success in the D-league. Wonder if he knows defense.

He's also on the Canadian staff so he has a relationship with Wiggins and Bennett.

I don't know much about him other than what I just read. Sounds like a very hard-working guy who Williams loved. Wants to be a head coach some day. I don't know anything about his defensive coaching. Overall, I guess I like adding another young coach, especially if he is a replacement for Adelman Jr.

Is Jeff van gundy still hanging around the team? Any rumblings of flip still being interested in JVG?

This is a move to go after AD when he becomes a free agent.

Hiring an assistant coach to go after a player who won't be a free agent for 6 years doesn't make any sense.

Maybe AD is the contingency plan in case Wiggins bolts for Toronto after a couple of titles with the Wolves by then?

There is limited info on what kind of coach he is but he reminds me of Joeger a guy that seemed to win everywhere he went and then paid his dues at the NBA level. It's interesting he is on the team Canada staff also good info.

There was some talk about they were too good of friends they didn't want to mess that up which sounds like BS to me for one reason or another but if that's true I could respect it. Bottom line is neither Flip or JVG probably know if JVG is the guy for the job.
