Six to Midnight: Three Questions

Post by Mstermisty [enjin:6864008] »

I'm always excited this time of the year. Training camp is right around the corner, and despite not being in the playoffs since the 'Nam, hope springs eternal. So during the off-season I'm at 6:00, but by mid-September I'm usually creeping towards 8:00.

But this year...

I'm already at about 9:15. Wiggins, Towns, healthy Ricky (knock on wood), Lavine, Shabazz, Gorgui, Professor of Big Shots, Da Kid....this is going to a be a LOT of fun.

So three questions. Where are you at presently? Where will you peak at? And what will you finish the season at?

Me: 9:15 presently, will peak at 11:30 (Wolves surprise everybody and challenge for a playoff spot but narrowly miss out), and end the season at 10:00 (Wolves miss playoffs but overall the season is a great step forward, for once, and is a preview of even better things to come).

Interesting way to think about things Mstermisty. I had to read your analogy a couple of times. So if Midnight equates to peak excitement, does that mean Noon is the polar opposite of Midnight and therefore would represent sheer disgust and disinterest?

I would say the pattern for most fans in recent years (or decades?) is hitting rock bottom sometime between the all-star break and the end of the season. But instead of a linear shift back toward midnight, there is a fairly quick bounce back as we look forward to the lottery (a near perennial past time for us Wolves fans), draft, and summer league. Then things cool off a bit - perhaps some of us revert back to the afternoon hours - before October rolls around and camp opens. Then the bounce back occurs again.

As for your questions, I'm probably at about 8 or 9:00PM right now. Your other two questions are analogous to predicting our season win total and playoff chances. We can save that for another thread!

Wait! Is this before, or after daylight savings time?!? ;-)

Oh, never mind... I guess I am at midnight! Playoffs here we come! And while you listed most of the young guys to get you to 9:15, it's the old guys that move the hand for me - KG, Miller and Martin. They are the ones that will keep the Good Ship Lollipop headed towards the playoffs. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9IjfQS0KZ4)

Last year at this time I was at 7 pm...pretty optimistic after unloading Love for Wiggins/Bennett. After we went 2-2 to start the season, going toe-to-toe with teams like the Griz and the Bulls, I moved closer to 9PM. But after Rubio got hurt (followed by other injuries) and Thad left for his 2-week grieving period and the team fell apart, my excitement level fell off the cliff and went back to mid-afternoon at best.

But my excitement level has increased steadily since we won the first pick. The news this summer has been largely positive, especially with the performance of Bjelica in the FIBA, and I am sitting at 10pm as we anticipate the start of training camp. If the Wolves stay reasonably healthy, I expect them to easily challenge for a playoff spot, and that alone will keep my clock at at least 10pm. But if we get hit by the injury bug again, especially if it impacts a key player like Rubio again, my clock will fall back to mid-afternoon very quickly. The talent is there to move us toward midnight, but the potential for injuries to push us back toward noon is equally present.

I'm always in bed long before midnight so I never quite get there. I'm at about a 5:00 right now. Too much going on like the Vikings Monday night debacle. But I will build up quickly and by the opener I'll check in at about 10:30. If we get off to a good start that will ratchet up to 11:00 pretty quick..

I honestly don't fully get the premise of this thread and I did a good chunk of a Chronobiology class on coursera.org last year. Lol

I'll put it his way looking back since the season ended the positives for this team have built every few weeks. The only downer is Flip's health and the coaching situation. We got the first pick and drafted Towns got a nice prospect in Tyus at PG which is a place we needed to add a guy. Bjelica comes over on a bargain contract. Payne showed some life in SL and other guys showed some good things too. We moved Bud for either a vomule 3 point shooter in Rudez or to basically an open roster spot. The Wolves signed Miller. They sign Prince. Bennett looks physically good stays healthy and has a lot of success this summer. Wolves bring in Arnie Kander. I might be missing a few things but it's a pretty damn good offseason for a team looking to build something.

I just can't decide what my expectations are for this team quite yet. Flip's health and Sam taking over makes me somewhat less sure about where I am at there partly just because Flip's health is just a big downer.

Maybe someone can translate that into the appropriate time for the analogy of this thread? lol
