Size Matters

I just read the first post tourney article giving the draft board breakout:

According to that board, five guys in their top 10 are 6'-11 or 7 footers. Assuming the Wolves pick up one of them, we certainly will have some size to choose from for next year:

Payne - 6'10"
Pek - 6'-11"
Dieng 6'-11"
KG - 6'-11"
Hamilton - 7'
Draft Pick - 7'

Very true, although I'm not counting on Pek or KG for next season, regardless if they are still under contract or not. That leaves three guys in Payne, Dieng, and Hamilton (if we sign him) who ideally are PFs, not Centers. All three of these guys are too physically weak to play Center on a full-time basis.

If we can get our mitts on Towns or Okafor and Flip shows a willingness to move Dieng to our full-time starting PF (again, I'm assuming KG won't be available very often), I'd feel a lot better about things.

I haven't seen Hamilton much but Q I feel like all 3 of these guys are sort of PF/C combo guys but not in a good way but in a bad way that they can't guard either position all that well. That's bad news right?

Also size doesn't matter if they can't play and can't stay healthy. Watching some of the PF/C on this team make me long for the undersized Jeff Adrian.

Monster, I think Payne is actually pretty close to the ideal size and athleticism of a prototypical PF. He has a really nice combination of length, athleticism, and overall size. However, he sabotages these physical gifts by being totally bereft of basketball IQ. I'm not sure how he overcomes this at his age and after four years in a top notch college program.

I think the best we can hope for is that he becomes a nice hustle player that eventually uses his athleticism to get loose balls and easy buckets at the rim.

For Hamilton and Dieng, I think PF is the lesser of two evils. They aren't ideally suited to either position defensively, but I think their weaknesses are less exposed guarding PFs.
