Ah well that's good to hear. Just would be nice to see more realistic optimism from some vs the nearly always overboard criticism/negativity. I was stuck working and didn't catch the game or thread.

It's amazing that we are still fans much less have much positivity towards this team at all. It's just another grand example of the human spirit. Lol

The mistake was trading Miami's 1st for Thad. We were clearly in rebuild mode at the time and Thad makes little sense as a starting PF or as part of a rebuild process. Trading Thad for KG doesn't bother me much right now, but we don't know what assets we could have gotten instead of KG in exchange for Thad. And we don't know yet what, if anything, we'll get from KG next season.

If KG signs at no more that $5 million next season and gives us around 20 minutes per game for around 60 games at the level of play we saw from him his few games with us this season, then I'll be happy with the deal. But if KG doesn't re-sign or re-signs but doesn't give us many meaningful minutes, then I'll be down on Flip for the deal.

I still don't like the Payne deal. The value of a future 1st round pick likely in the teens as an asset for a rebuilding team like the Wolves exceeds what I think we'll end up getting from Payne. His high bonehead quotient on both ends is disturbing for a 4 year college player from a major university under a top head coach. I hope I turn out to be wrong and I haven't totally dismissed the possibility of Payne becoming a good rotation player for the Wolves. But I'm certainly skeptical.

I'm on the fence right now when it comes to Flip. He certainly does show signs of being a snake oil salesman. When he first took over as President of Basketball Ops he provided an extremely evasive answer to a reporter's question asking him if he planned to coach. In fact his answer clearly indicated he likes to coach. Then, somehow he ended up naming himself head coach after what now seems to have been a largely insincere or sham search process for a new head coach. He always has pat answers that, on reflection, often don't add up. He definitely wants to own the team but needs an investor group to make that happen. So he trades for KG, a guy with lots of money and connections to more money through the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Hmmm.

I've spent some time with Flip and like him personally. I think he has a good eye for talent and I like a number of the moves he's made - trading Love for Wiggins, drafting LaVine, drafting Shabazz and Dieng. Yet i have a hard time with the Pek contact, selling the 27th pick when Gobert was available, trading Miami's 1st for Thad and swapping our own future first for Payne. We'll see how Flip does this summer and how his other decisions turn out overtime. As a head coach, I have a hard time not holding him at least partially responsible for the team's incredibly poor defense all season. I just don't see our injuries or youth as an entirely adequate excuse for this team's historically horrendous defense. And there is no justification for designing an offense in today's NBA that fails to incorporate 3-point shooting.

I can't tell if this is serious or sarcasm. Realistic optimism? You know the Wolves haven't made the playoffs in 10 years right? That they don't look close to getting there either. They might not win another game this season which would end up being the second worst in their sorry history, just one game better then the Kurt Rambis led squad of guys like Flynn, Darko, and Brian Cardinal.

They have an injury problem that they have no clue how to fix.

They still have Glen Talyor, who will still be around for a long time.

And hey if Flip doesn't work out, were boned! Because he has ultimate job security.

If I could literally think of one worst franchise in the past decade in all of sports I would but I can't.

Haha yeah after all the losing we're probably all just suckers. The reason I'm still positive is because of Wiggins. For the first time since we trading KG we have a player who looks like he's capable of leading the team back to the playoffs.

Yes, realistic optimism. Meaning not even the rose colored classes type of optimism. You are negative so often I wonder why you even bother watching or caring about the damn team. I seriously don't know if I've ever seen someone more negative about their team than you have been recently.

There are plenty positives to look forward to with this team. Here are the big ones: Wiggins, Lavine, Bazz.
Rubio makes the team better and he loves it here. Dieng could be a decent rotation guy. Martin is a very good scorer. We also have physically gifted yet unknown talent in Bennett & Payne. If the coaches can get them to realize some of that they can be rotation guys as well. We have an owner who loves his team, the city, wants to win and he spends money on players. He isn't perfect, but we could do worse in that department.

Yes all the injuries suck and we all question certain moves the team has made. Most of us probably don't like the offensive or defensive systems, we haven't made the playoffs in years and all the losing gets tiresome, but c'mon. If you can't see some positives and enjoy the team then what's the point?

Plus, they have Johnny Football now, and we only have Wiggins...so their future is clearly much brighter.

Excellent post, grey. In all fairness to Alex, he looks a lot better the past few years than the rose-colored glasses fans like me...I'm tired of being disappointed year after year. But I like the concept of "reasonable optimism". Can anyone name a Wolves' roster in the past tem years with more promise than this one? I can't find one that is even close.
