Re: Another article about useless mentorship
Says more about the lack of confidence in the coaching staff than it does about our "mentorship program." We have the worst assistants in the league, though I have a little faith in Ryan Saunders when it comes to analytics and the work he's done with past guards. Sidney Lowe shouldn't be in the league and David Adelman was only brought in because of his father. And then you have Sam Mitchell, who I have no confidence in to groom this core into a great team. The country club is in full effect there.
Call me when these mentors start putting wins in the record book. The best way for these young guys to learn is trial and error, not being barked at by over-the-hill former great players.

I believe in mentorship. But I think it's better when they bring in Vets at, or near the top of their game vs. at the end of their careers. Otherwise, like Cam wrote, think it's pretty tough not to just tune the old timers out. Nobody wants to listen to "Back in my day....we used to...." The current NBA isn't going to be the same as the NBA 10 years ago. Things are always changing. I think people want to learn from people who are having success now as that's what's current/relevant. We'll see how it all works out.

Carlo's you nailed it. When Sam was mentoring KG he was not at the tail end of his career. He was in his prime. We don't have anyone like that here. The assistants here are horrible. I will give Sam a pass, but he should be able to bring in his guys and take out the trash with the situation we have with Flip.
Re: Another article about useless mentorship
Bottom line for me is the same. This franchise has lacked player vet leadership for a decade. Name a vet player Love got to learn anything from. Do we need all the guys we have now? Idk but we needed at least one if not 2. Having a couple guys that know what they are doing in practice likely makes that time more productive. People say these guys are near the end of their careers. Yeah they are but they can still play the game. Chicago wanted Andre Miller. The Cavs wanted Prince I am sure there were teams that would have signed KG if there was an opportunity to do so. (for less money than we have him lol) these guys were terrific players in their prime and they are older now but they still have something to offer. Other people will disagree on that but that's cool.
I get why people dog on Lowe because he is a country club guy and was a failure at HC both at college and NBA but the idea he is some clueless assistant and shouldn't even be in the league seems going too far. I am not suggesting he is amazing or anything but my guess is he is plenty competent as an NBA assistant. I am not endorsing him as much as just being realistic about him.

In terms of Lowe, I know almost nothing about him. For those criticizing him, what are your reasons? I know he was an unsuccessful head coach, does that mean he's also a bad assistant? I can see how that might be the case, but also how it might not.
I think the concern about vets past their prime is fair to consider for guys like Prince and Miller. That doesn't automatically mean they are useless. But with a guy like KG, I think it's different. First, despite making some enemies and showing some questions behavior during his career, KG is widely respected around the league. Second, for years young bigs in particular, including Towns, have cited him as an inspiration. And third, he's practically venerated around here, and will offer a great bridge between the fans and the next generation of players.

I don't think vets are useless, but at some point I think you look at the roster and try and get a player that can be a leader ad still play and fits. I am thinking you trade anyone not named Towns, Wiggins, and LaVine for that player that is an all-star or near.

Need to make a strong play for Horford next off-season. $20+ million in cap space next summer.

I would rather try and get Mike Conley. I don't think he'll leave Memphis $$$$$. But I would like to see the push to try and upgrade the pg. Then trade Rubio.

<<Name a vet player Love got to learn anything from>> Easy. Al Jefferson took him under his wing.
