Who do you want to coach this team?
Who do you want to coach this team?
Ok it's been a few weeks since Glen took charge took Flip outbid the game for his health and put Milt and Sam in charge of the team for now. I think most of us can agree Sam is likely to be the coach this entire season. I don't think Taylor is gonna let Flip coach again period and it makes no sense for him to come back and coach this year disrupting whatever Sam has going on. I think it's likely Flip will not coach this team again. Glen didn't want him doing both jobs and now there is every reason for him not to do both. I expect Flip will agree. Billy Donovan is the latest person to say Glip talked to him about the Wolves job so I think Flip was looking the whole time but couldn't get his guy for one reason or another. Ok so let's assume Flip isn't coming back who do you want?
It's obviously early we have a whole season of young players to see what we have how they progress and even what Sam and the current staff do but I know people probably would like to throw some names out now. I think this can be an interesting thread to look back on later and I don't think we need to take it too seriously but I think it's an interesting conversation to have.
My thought is that Sam may be the guy they go with for a season beyond this one if its still a developing team and he is generally going in the right direction there. In other words this team struggles but looks promising but nobody still wants to take over because it might be 3 years before they are relavent. I know that bugs some people but I sorta can't blame some coaches based on how guys have gotten fired after literally a few months. I am not advocating for Sam but he could be the guy that sort of takes one for the franchise and labors under the developmental stage till the right guy takes over. If he is willing to do that props to him in a way.
I can't think of guys available that I really want. If this team can really score maybe Thibs makes sense to get them playing defense. I tend to think Flip was looking more for a younger guy but he seemed to talk to a pretty wide variety of guys. Anywho thoughts?

J.B. Bickerstaff is still my leading candidate, assuming Tom Thibodeau isn't a realistic choice.

Re: Who do you want to coach this team?
I have been a Sam Mitchell fan since his days playing with the Wolves, and I'm hoping he shows enough this year to earn the coaching job. I still marvel at how he overachieved at Toronto without nearly the potential talent he has to work with here. Flip has assembled a talented young core, and I don't think it would be optimal to have to them play for three coaches in three years. If the Wolves improve by 20 wins and we see solid development in our young guys, that should be enough to convince Glen to keep Sam as coach. That's what I'm hoping for.
But if this season is another disaster, I will jump on the new coach bandwagon. I don't have anyone specific in mind, but I'm intrigued by Cam's guy Bickerstaff. He's a young defensively-oriented rising star in the NBA, and it seems that he had some success improving Houston's defense last year. But I wonder how much longer McHale wants to coach, and whether the Rockets have given JB some assurances about his future there.

I want somebody who has either won a title (college or pro) as a head coach, or an NBA title as a player. I believe in this experience.

If I'm reading you correctly, you've narrowed your short list down to Kevin Garnett and Tubby Smith...two guys with titles and Minnesota ties.

Or maybe hoping for Rhambis to come back.

Why do they have to have Minnesota ties? I think it's very difficult for someone who has never won to teach a young team how to do it. What experience would he lean on?

This seems like weird criteria to really lean on as there have been plenty of good/great basketball coaches that didn't win a championship of any kind before coaching.

Ok, I'm a Mitchell guy, but I also want Milt and Glen to keep their eyes on possible replacements if Sam doesn't work out. Here are a few guys I would like them to consider in addition to Bickerstaff.
1) Ime Udoka
2) Kenny Atkinson
3) Alex Jensen
4) Sean Miller
5) Nate Bjorkgren
6) Tyronn Lue
All except Miller are young NBA assistants with good pedigrees. Atkinson and Udoka would be my top choices. Still hoping Sam Mitchell leads them to 40 wins and gets the job though.
