Re: Who Will Flip Take
Very telling text today at the end of the Zgoda article comparing Towns and Okafor:
[/In five weeks time, Saunders must choose a player and a style: Does he follow in the way Golden State, Houston and others have changed the game, a manner of play Rose (Jalen) calls the "flavor of the month."
Or does he admit the game never stays forever the way it is now and instead play the contrarian?
"Because everybody is playing one way, you can go back and play the other way and still be very efficient," Saunders said. There are different ways to look at it." b]
I've made reference to this way of thinking in some past threads. I totally agree the game never stays the same for very long. But instead of "going back" to an abandoned style, I hope Flip builds his team in yet a new direction. I'm not smart enough to think of what that way will be, but someone is and will reap the benefits.
Flip should take Towns and search for the best way to play tomorrow.

It's a fun video to go back and watch from time to time, if for no other reason, just to remember that we actually won the lottery. The players' reaction is interesting and informative, but I enjoy watching the three guys on stage even more. Two observations:
1) In a series of one on one games between those three guys, Glen finishes last every time...even considering his deadly sky hook. He's a pesky defender, but I think Nerlens would eventually wear him down. I loved how the camera had to pan way down when they shifted from Noel to Taylor.
2) I wasn't convinced at the time, and I'm still not convinced, that Glen fully processed what was happening when they called the Lakers' name for the second pick. He is expressionless, and I really think he thought they were announcing the Lakers getting the first pick. With our history, I have a difficult time blaming him for that!
Good stuff LST!
I personally was shocked I can't imagine what Glen was thinking. Lol

I don't know if this has been posted in any other threads, but I found it compelling evidence that Flip has decided on Towns. Heisler is a reputable guy who doesn't just pull stuff out of his ass. Flip clearly now prefers Towns.
What the Lakers are going through reminds me a lot of what we had to go through in 2011. While most mocks had Irving #1 and Williams #2, there were rumors from time to time that the Cavs might take Williams. Gave us some hope...until it didn't. The Lakers had to be feeling pretty good with all the rumors of Flip preferring Okafor, but in the end, they're not going to get Towns.

I saw this through BMTN. It's good to hear.

Offensive schemes come and go but defense is forever. Pick the two way player unless the one way player is so dominant that you know he'll change the game going forward.
Pick Towns, end of story.

He was thinking "Did I remember to take my medications today? Hmmm, what day is today anyways?"

I think it's pretty clear we are taking Towns. It's the safer decision. Okafor has more upside to me. I know Towns does most things well, but if Okafor fixes his defensive deficiencies he will be outstanding. That being said Towns gives you great defensive production and good offensive potential. He needs somebody that can develop his post game. His footwork needs help and he needs more post moves. He has great touch and a great stroke. I know the current NBA has turned away from the post, but having a big that can score inside is rare and still tough to defend. Defense wins and Towns and Wiggins are two very nice young blocks to build the team with. After we pick Towns we need to find a 4 and hope Rubio can stay healthy and be our PG.

Re: Who Will Flip Take
Reading Flip would be a good separate thread. Being a good POBO he is not tipping his hand.
thinking about his comments in the past, I think this means Towns.
It's not what position you play, it's who you can defend.
He wants 2 way players
He has 2 players who can post up their man(Wiggins and Shabbaz)
The first two comments would favor Towns
The third comment would mean someone who could better space the floor and not clog up the middle
ie not Okafor.
10 days and counting :)

My points have been made here, and opinions are fine, but there's a reason Towns is ranked higher than Okafor and it goes beyond defense. Players his size aren't supposed to be able to do the stuff he can do. There are scouts/trainers/front office personnel quotes saying they've never seen a prospect like him before. His offensive upside is way higher than I think you're giving him credit for.
Re: Who Will Flip Take
I just got back from a long vacation. If I were smart, I would have extended it another week to avoid this waiting game...
But it doesn't matter. I am 100% convinced Flip will pick Towns. It seems pretty apparent that Flip already believes he has his #1 player with Wiggins. And he said "how a player fits with the team" will be one of the deciding factors. Towns versatility is a much better fit than Okafor's low post presence. Why would the Wolves take a player who he needs the ball in his hands to be effective when you already have Rubio and Wiggins that need the ball as well?
The pick will be Towns. And there will be much rejoicing.
