This is true. Someone "in the know" told me that Bjelica would be here in a second if they could dump Bud or Pek's contracts in a trade. But there's no shot on Pek, and even Chase would be doubtful.

Unsure on if neither are traded.

This person is credible, and would know about this kind of stuff, and I'm not claiming to know more - this is literally one convo I had with them about it.

They may. They need contracts so they can reach the cap floor. They won't take Pek though. That ship has sailed.

Nobody has to reach the cap floor. All those Suzers players were sad when they didn't get to split the money that was under the cap floor last year. Lol

I think Bud may be moveable. I have wondered if Salary is one reason Flip isn't sure about bringing on Bjelecia but you would think if they really liked him they would make it happen one way or another. I am not cap expert what options are there to fit Bjelicia and that 3 years 15 million in?

Our cap situation is such that we'd have to use the MLE to give Bjelica the money he apparently wants. Moving Budinger, even without taking any salary in return, would not put us under the cap. So I don't see any sense in the Wolves tying a contract for Bjelica to moving Budinger or Pek. Signing Bjelican while also carrying an extra $5 million on the payroll for only one more season (i.e., Budinger) wouldn't put us over the luxury tax threshold or have a significant impact on Glen Taylor's bottom line. It's about cap management and there isn't any cap link between Bjelica and and Budinger. Now, Pek is a different story, but we all know we won't be able to move him without taking an equally undesirable contract in return.

So I'm not buying any financial explanations for declining to sign Bjelica. We either like him and think he fits well or we don't. If we do, then we should use the MLE and sign him. If not, we should put the rights to him on the market and see what we can get this summer.

Lip thanks for the breakdown that's really what I thought as well but I wasn't sure about the cap space so that's good to have it clarified.

Do you have a feeling about how the Wolces feel about Bjelica? I wonder if Flip likes him to a certain extent but doesn't really want to spend basically his only decent money he can spend on FA for him. It's a young team but if we could have some money to bring in a decently quality vet because we had $ to offer like we did with Mo that would be nice. There may even be a younger vet player worth throwing a little money at.

Hoopshype has us just over 56 million for next year with 10 guys under contract and Hummel and Hamilton's QO's making 12 guys. Am I missing something because that's about 11 million under the projected cap? If you are able to dump Bud and the two QO's that's about 18 million under the projected cap. Even with cap holds I think we'd be able to fit NB under normal cap space if we were able to dump Bud. Unless KG has a massive cap hold to keep his bird rights which the site doesn't track, I think we'd just renounce his bird rights and get KG's deal in as the MLE. There's going to be cap space to sign one guy and the MLE to sign the other I would think.

I am not in favor of signing a guy in his mid twenties with no NBA experience to a MLE size contract. The guy could be a complete flop and then we have another Bud type deal on our hands for another 3 years. Trade the rights and move on. That is the type of player you sign to a team like SA.

We're still in the throw shit at the wall and see what sticks phase and with the cap jump, taking a 5 million dollar flyer on a potential rotation guy isn't a bad move. If you can get back into the first round with him do it, but if not I think you see what he can give you on the court.

I believe that would be a great course of action, provided there is someone Flip has on his target list in that area of the first round.

Classifying that as "inconsequential" is how teams find themselves in salary cap hell. Every contract counts, particularly if it is for 3 years. Once the wolves make FA signing using cap space, they are considered under the cap for purposes of the MLE, and as such will receive the smaller exception.

The wolves have approximately 62 mil on the books with the first rounder and a twelfth roster spot. That means KG has been renounced, and QO's haven't been extended. If you resign KG you can use the full MLE to sign Belica, but that leaves you next to nothing to fill in other positions. Dumping Bud might help depending on what KG signs for, but then you have to worry about falling below the cap and losing the full MLE. Unless you can trade Bud to acquire a backup PG, I don't think we will be doing anything to mind boggling.

Makes a lot more sense Cool. I think you only sign a guy like Belica if you think you have your core in place, and I'm not ready to say that. We jumped the gun with Adelman, and it set us back 5 years.
