Did any bench guys play garabage time last year for Adelman? It seemed like he would play the starters or JJ or whatever up until the last minute or so in games that were pretty much over. Lol

Cam, Robbie had to play some critical minutes for us due to the injuries later in the season. He even started 5 games for us. He wasn't just a garbage time player, and in fact, I would posit that he played more non-garbage minutes than garbage minutes. By the way, many of the other bench guys played in garbage time too.

So they were in garbage games. Jellyball had to play some critical minutes 2 seasons ago for reference

Q12543 wrote:I understand where the Hummel skeptics are coming from, but let me point out a few additional facts.

1. Robbie Hummel was our only bench player with a net positive on/off number. In other words, we actually performed slightly better as a team when he was in the game versus out of the game. That wasn't the case with Barea, Cunningham, Dieng, Shabazz, Shved, Turiaf, Budinger, and Mbah Moute. In every single case, except for Hummel, our team performed worse with them on the court versus off of the court. So for as horrible as some of you claim him to be, it certainly didn't affect our quality of play as a team while he was on the court. Was that just dumb luck?

2. Hummel was our 5th best rebounder, behind Love, Dieng, Turiaf, and Pekovic. Folks always seem to underestimate the value of ending possessions (defensive rebounding) and continuing possessions (offensive rebounding). Outside of Love and our Centers, he was our best rebounder folks.

3. Hummel had the lowest turnover rate on our squad last season and had nearly a 3:1 assist to turnover ratio. Unlike a lot of younger players, he actually knows what the hell he's doing out there. He averaged .5 turnovers per 36 minutes. The ability to play mistake-free basketball actually matters, yet turnovers is often overlooked as a meaningful statistical category.

4. What some of you see as someone with poor lateral movement and lack of vertical leap, I see a guy that makes good decisions, positions himself well, and fights for rebounds.

5. And we get all of this for only 900K!

His shooting efficiency was poor, but I think with more reps he will eventually be a good 3-point shooter. He's proven that at other levels of play and I have no doubt he can get there in the NBA.

Good post q. Hummel actually started in games where martin was out early in the season. He will start at sf and brewer moves to sg in those instances. We won a couple of those games and even had a big blowout win. He even got to play ahead of dw in the rotation early in the season. Bud pretty much took his minutes and role once he got back and hummel spend a few games inactive.

Look guys, hummel is signed the minimum and will probably be in street cloths a lot this season. I dont see a problem with that. He is best suited as a 13-15th guy and is being paid accordingly.

Hummel's ability to play mistake free solid basketball might make even more sense if the Wolves end up doing the Wiggins trade and go pretty young. It might be nice to have a smart play within himself type (even in practives) with all that youth who tend to make mistakes or go for the big play.

Isn't missing every shot making mistakes? Oh to go back and look at old game threads when I'm sure I remember people saying Hummel can't play basketball

Robbie struggled to make shots, especially in his earliest stint in the rotation. But his TS% gradually improved as the season progressed and he at least showed some ability to knock down the 3 (36% for the year). I'm betting that he improves his efficiency based on the trend last year and increased comfort with the NBA game. I think Monster makes a good point that Hummel gives you a veteran-like presence off the bench, but at a very low salary. He's a very good value. He posted a WS/48 of .084. That's not that bad; half our roster did worse. Add to that his On/Off numbers and pretty soon it strains credibility to suggest he shouldn't be on an NBA roster.

Interesting argument. You can brush off the numbers as some sort of trivial matter since it doesn't fit your narrative of Hummel, but they are a far better depiction of reality than "he can't jump high enough" or "he looked like he would poop himself".

ugh fine 3 points a game on 37% shooting. Not quite sure how you spin those numbers positively
