Draft Grade
Re: Draft Grade
I went with the A+ Towns was an A+ and the bottom line for me with Tyus is he is a kid that turned 19 weeks ago and had a pretty solid freshman year plus won a national championship. This team had a need of a young talent at PG behind Rubio and Jones was the youngest PG prospect and we got him. His defense may not have been good but he was also playing with Okafor as his center on that end. Lol. Like someone said in another thread Ridnour has had a solid NBA career if Tyus could become just that good it would be a good pick. Terrific FT shooter is a positive.
After this draft I feel Flip has a lot of latitude of what he wants to do with the roster before the season starts. He could do almost nothing interesting and it would be fine with me. Sign Bjelica, bring back Hummel and maybe bring in a guard that's a cheap vet and see where we go from there.

Re: Draft Grade
I really dig the draft this season for the Wolves.
A+ is pretty lofty though. For me, that means there's no possible way the Wolves could have done anything better. That means there's no other alternative better than Tyus Jones.
While I dig Jones, I don't know if there's no possible better alternative. I give the Wolves an A though. Sorry for being so cynical... again.

Re: Draft Grade
Debating whether the draft deserves an A or A+ is pretty awesome!
I still believe Flip will add a vet PG and bring over Bjelica. And he will try to move Bud and/or Bennett. That's not a whole lot left to do!
Rubio / Tyus / vet PG
Martin / Zach
Wiggins / Shabazz / Bud
KG / Bjelica / Payne / Bennett
Towns / Dieng / Pek

Big night last night! I haven't seen Jones play much, but good job by flip in getting him. Bilas seemed to like him a lot.

Re: Draft Grade
I wanted B+
Towns is a good pick, but Russell could be the best pick in the draft. I would give an A for this pick, but can't give an A+.
Tyus Jones seems like a homer pick to me. Lets face it we got the 7th picked PG in the draft that was not a strong PG draft. People say that if Luke can be an NBA player then Jones can be. To me that is trying to sell yourself on the trade. Luke was better across the board in college. I would have rather had Joseph Young and rights to Guillermo "Willy" Hernangomez.
BTW: I think is was smart for Kinick to pick up the rights to Willy. If they bring him over it will only help Porzingis adjust.

Re: Draft Grade
The media seems to agree with us, because generally the grades are very high. Here's just one example:
http://www.sbnation.com/2015/6/25/8841427/nba-draft-grades-first-round-timberwolves-mavericks-pacers-karl-towns
We've talked a little about Tyus being a winner, but I don't think we have developed that enough. It's not just that his teams (whether they be high school, AAU or Duke) always win, it's that he seems to shine when it counts most. And as Wolves fans, this is something we have often lacked. The Kevins, Love and Martin, are both prolific scorers, but neither have been good for us at the end of games. I can only remember one game-winner for each of them...bizarre, considering the volume of shots they take. Heck, I'll even add KG to that group, as he seldom seemed to want to take the big shot. Tyus wants the ball when the game is on the line, and he doesn't miss when his team needs him. It's an intangible that can't be discounted. Now, he may not be on the court often at crunch time, but it's good to know what's inside of him anyway.

Re: Draft Grade
I gave it a B. Flip got it right with the first pick. Thought we gave up too much to get the wrong type of PG. I hope I'm proven wrong though.

Re: Draft Grade
The hell with grading the picks on basketball ability and fit. Huffington Post gets to the real issue, and grades the first picks on their outfits (Towns was a B, and no grade for Tyus since he wasn't there).

Am I the only one that can't wait for all the crazy fashions at the NHL draft tonight?

Re: Draft Grade
Gave it an A. Flip got BPA and didn't pull any Khan style dunce moves with the pick. Don't know how I feel about Jones. I worry about his athleticism, but like his potential as an assist man.
Re: Draft Grade
A couple of tidbits from Flip's morning interviews:
Said he has a list every day of who he would draft #1 (he has lists for all sorts of stuff). Towns has been atop that list since sometime during the college season. He also said that during their due diligence, and especially after the Towns workout (don't know if it was West coast workout or the private workout here), it became clear Towns was the #1 pick, and wasn't even close.
Said when a couple guys went sooner than expected (I assume Rozier and Vaughn), that caused a couple guys to slide to teams that did not expect them there (I assume Anderson to Mavs, and Portis to Bulls). Memphis was going to take Tyus, but Cleveland called back with 2 minutes left on their clock to accept the 31 & 36 deal.
Ok, this is me. I am really high on the Tyus pick. Not because I think he is an eventual starter, but because I think he can be a good backup PG. Rubio and Tyus can work together for a long time. DX had Tyus as the #4 PG behind Russell, Mudiay and Payne. It doesn't bother me one bit that he slipped to the 7th PG taken. Consider ourselves lucky he slid to a point where we could snatch him up for a pretty minimal price. Nicely done, Flip!
